Belkin reveals world's first Gigabit Powerline adapter

The technology that allows you to stream data through your house's existing electrical circuits is interesting. Not only is it interesting, but it's mighty secure and extra stable, and companies know this... and they sure want consumers to know it too. Belkin have a range of what they call "Powerline" adapters, products which plug directly into your electrical socket and can communicate to other adapters throughout the house. Just today, however, they have release a new product in this line, collectively called the "Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit adapters", and as you can imagine, they can transfer some pretty slick speeds.

These only work on the home "ring main" (home power supply) so it is a secure network. Nothing can hack into it.

Well i suppose you could connect one side to your modem or router and the other to your computer, right? so you would still be connected to the internet.

well i have the 200mbit adapters and get about 30mbit...from one room to another and they are still next to each other.
and sometimes i get stuttering when playing videos... so speeds seem to drop sometimes.

I guess with the gigabit adapters you can get about 100-200mbit if they work as promised... using real ethernet cables is always recommended over this technology - but its sometimes a good alternative to wlan.

Yes & No answers:

Yes if you are doing non bandwidth intensive activity like surfing e-mail and chating (messaging) on the internet.

No, If you wanted do use it of streaming HD videos and playing online games (within the LAN) then you may find it problematic as this activities would required more bandwidth (about 25Mbps or more) if you do multiple streaming on HD video then surely it would not be sufficient and the videos may lag or shutter, be it the 200Mbps, 500Mpbs or the 1000Mbps (Gigabit) Powerline (PLC) adapters. So it would very wise to surf the web forums and blog to see the truth of this
plc adapters real performance (not in the lab test environment). Hope this helps!

I've tried Linksys products like this back in the day and wasn't really happy with the results. As someone said prior the performance was never close to or even half of what the box advertises, there's a lot of instability in the performance.

It does have a use like if you can't get wireless to work between rooms reliably for whatever reason and you don't want to run a hard line between rooms and floors.
