Hi, I'm using Bitdefender 2009 and its almost expiring, so i need to get a new anti-virus. Which is the best nowadays? Cause I remember for 2009 BitDefender was one of the best, but I dont know about 2010. Thanks

Why not have a try about free anti-virus?such as,AVG ,Avast! home editon

Avast works great with Windows 7. Auto updates itself and it just works! I've used it for years on a lot of systems.

Lord make my word sweet, in case I have to eat them later...
Currently Microsoft's MSE is only the best and free antivirus program (I am using this). AV-Comparatives. org rated it as good ( malware and leftovers removal), all others shows an average result, expect a few (e-Scan and Symantec) (September 09 report)

ESET is pretty much the best there is. Most VB awards. Most Av comparatives top honors.

I have used it since v 2.5 and it can't be matched.

It's the proven leader!

If you Google any Anti virus software you will find a Report that tells you that it is the best you can use,and you can also find one that tells you that it is the worst.
Make a decision do you want to pay for one or want a free one.
Select one from the main stream AV's that seems to you to do the job and go for it.
You will find that as this thread gets larger you will find more and more AV programs recommended until you have just about every AV program recommended and you are back where you started

+1 for avast or Microsoft's SE

I say avast if your really worried (it feels like it scans stuff better, slower maybe?)
i know that is very scientific
Microsoft security essentials is a lot faster with quick scans at least and is pretty lightweight

I dont know why ppl find MSE as lightweight. I m sure its always between 40-50 MB.
Lightweight products are Norton 2010 or Kaspersky 2010 which are merely under 10 MB. ;)

@ Dinesh, you probably have forgotten more than I know about Security but your reports mean absolutely nothing. With a different set of viruses, trojans etc. the results would be completely different.
Before this thread is finished you will find more than 20 AV'S recommended as they are the best.
The truth is that most do a good job but not a perfect job,it's a matter of perception if you think that a certain AV does a better job use it and BE HAPPY with the thought that your system is protected.
As stated earlier a multi-layered approach is the best defense.

That chart helps ppl to judge accordingly. n BTW, these tests are run on a heavily infected machine with most wild viruses available out there. The October 2009 test were conducted to see which AV has the capabilities of not only removing the virus but also removing the left overs registry entries and stuffs.

Yeah but like he said, a different set of tests will give different results. It is a good guide but people need to read a few different reports and reviews then make a decision based on there needs (which is usually if they want a free product or are willing to pay)

Kaspersky Internet Security is always the best, deep down in your heart you all know that. Heuristic method pioneer, HIPS, application controller, behavioral method pioneer, network attack blocker. It's simply the best there is.

I've tried all famous anti-virus suit and here they are IMO:
>>Avira Premium Security is better but lacks of [app controller] it has allowed me to install rogue antivirus CS (cyber security) while kaspersky will force Windows to show "Access is denied. OK". It also lose in 2nd or 3rd or 4th and on and on on scanning time duration while kaspersky lose the 1st only.
>>ESET SS4 is good and only ESET is lighter than Kaspersky but when auto-remove is disabled I can still execute *.exe files of malware while kaspersky will force windows to show "Windows cannot acces the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. OK". And the proactive protection is really bad, it does not detect all malware if we just open the folder where the malwares are, it needs to do an on-demand scan of the folder to detect all the malwares.
>>BitDefender Total Security 2010 is excellent but lacking in GUI aesthetics and the GUI is not so easy to understand.
>>Symantec/Norton Internet Security 2010 is excellent but its toolbar is slowing my internet browsers and its parental control are hard to install, and are lacking in signature it has found 55 while Kaspersky found 59 of my malware collection.
>>AVG commercial version is average.
>>F-Secure is average.

The only lacking Kasperky has is that it took a loooong time to remove malwares, while ESET and Avira does it instantaneously. But that's why Kaspersky is 3 stars in Malware Removal Test.

And here I attached the lastest tests from AV-Comparatives, it says NIS2010 is the lightest but I don't think so, ESET is the lightest, Kaspersky 2nd, NIS 3rd.
