I like the K-Lite codec pack which installs Media Player Classic Home Cinema as one of its components. Plays everything I have thrown at it quite well in most cases and I like the media player classic home cinema player a lot for video. K-Lite

During the install process, one is presented with several options as to which codecs to use for various things. I always check AC3 filter wherever that is offered as an option because I think it provides better sound quality, although just using the defaults will usually work quite well too.

(Choose the "standard" pack or above to get the media player home cinema included.)

I prefer the Media Player Classic, which is also available in a 64 bit version now. No installation needed, he can automatically stretch the video to monitor size and plays everything. Filters can easilly be included, too.

The builtin players, Windows Media Player and Media Center work great when
a properly built codec package such as the Windows 7 Codecs is utilized.
For x64 users there is a 2nd installation required, x64 Components addon

No 3rd party players are needed in this case.

I believe you but 3rd party players have a lot more features than WMP like:
Zoom, Pan&Scan, subtitles, snapshot etc.

Since i find out that WMP can handle the subtitles correctly and that vlc is no good on windows 7 for now, i only use WMP:)... even in preview pane it shows subtitles... :) ... great... usually dont even open player just go to preview pane and if i like the video i double click to full screen and watch ... but well i have bs player just in case something go wrong... ;)

Neither do I. I run every file type known to man and VLC handles all of them by itself. I haven't installed a codec yet in win 7. If I did I would install individual files not codec packs (except for shark's of course <g>).

What's up with those .dlls?

No problem. I got homecinema x64 aswell, really cool. What .dlls do you mean?

@codecs: I use shark007's codecs for mkvs since that was the only way for me to get my bluray rips 1080p h264 to run properly in 16:10 with MPC. Of course you only need the haali media splitter to watch them on WMP, but i don't like black borders. I hate them, tbh. I never had any problems with them, no spyware, no computer crashes etc. Trust codecs!
