I am interested in uploading video's to YouTube with footage of gaming. However the .avi file is too large.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a good piece of software that will reduce the filesize without reducing the quality?

An AVI is just a container for whatever audio and video you have in it. If you want to reduce file size of a video, you need to convert it to a different type (mpeg, etc) and use a different codec to compress it. There are a ton of video converters available. I'd just google for video converter and find a free one that you like.

My video's don't really have audio, I heard H2.64/MPEG's the best, what converters do you suggest for this job?

I would prefer a trusted program, as a lot of programs of these types include viruses: X-vid for example.

I've never come across a freeware video converter with viruses. Stick to recognized shareware sites. I can't really recommend one, since I just google and find one I like when I need it. I haven't done it for quite a while and I don't remember the last ones I used, sorry.

If its H264 Video codec your after, Handbrake may be worth looking into as well. Should be able to convert video to a H264 format, and put it into a MP4 container.
((And yes, I agree H264 is one of the best))

But you could just uplaod it as it is to YouTube. That way theres only one conversion. Anytime you convert lossy-->lossy there will always be a quality drop.

How much depends on your bitrates and settings, resolution etc. So you can minimize it.

If it's standard def vdeo, I've heard converting to mp4 480P can yield very high quality for small file size. You can use a tool that lets you cut a snipped for test conversions. AviDemux is easy to use and good enough for slicing off a video clip. Just make sure you use the '<<' and '>>' keys so that the cut points are i-frames. It just avoids errors with converters that can't handle video that starts on a frame that's not an i-frame.

VideoHelp.com - Forum, Guides, Tools and hardware lists has a forum with many video veterans. Also doom9.com. But videohelp has a large archive of tools with a search engine for just about every conversion permutation of input to output type.
