Hi guys.
When opening my PC tonight, I was welcome to a "Please upgrade to WLM 2011" while trying to sign in. I tried WLM 2011 in the past, and I was totally disgusted at ONE thing :

The fact that I cannot set a nickname for Messenger

Oh sure, some would say : "Just change the first and last name to something you want". I say no to that. Why? Two reasons :

1. I want to use my e-mail as a professional contact and I don't want the "From :" field to say "Lebon 14".

2. I don't want to B1gPWNz0RzGua1!!!!!! in Brazil to know my real name when I chat with him/her (not that nick was used as an exemple).

And since I got that hotmail address since... I don't even remember! I want to keep it. There's a shitload of e-mails I don't want to break from and all my contacts know how to contact me that way; all the CVs I gave to find a job have this e-mail address.

So, yes, starting today, I am using aMSN.

What about you guys?

P.S I don't care about the other features... I only use the IM portion of WLM.

Clever idea, especially since many of us have chosen to stay with the 2009/2010 version of WLM which also requires we stick with the entire suite of Windows Live Essentials 2009/2010, including Messenger. But since Microsoft is forcing the Messenger upgrade, it amounts to forcing the entire suite upgrade. So apparently you can stay with the old suite as long as you don't install WLMessenger.

One thing that concerns me about many programs from SourceForge is they're usually for "Windows"...not Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, or 7. Just Windows. So when you have a problem you wonder if you were using it with the wrong version of Windows or you're supposed to be geeky enough to figure out how to make it work with your particular version.

When it comes to open-source, it's usually the latter XD

Strangely, I haven't seen the "please upgrade" message yet, and at times I use the messenger a lot. But I guess I will just stress it out up until the point it plain refuses to log me in until I "upgrade"; THEN I'll look for any and all alternatives.

For me it isn't so much the "please upgrade" message that bugs me, its the way that Windows Live 2011 periodically unhides itself from Windows Update then because it is considered an "important update" it tries to install itself automatically.

<insert expletive here> Off! I hid you for a reason! This is actually the reason I have turned automatic updating off.

To answer your question, yes I hate it with a passion. I have used hotmail and MSN for pretty much as long as I can remember, but if and when a time comes when I am forced to use 2011 I will be off.

Thank god, I'm not alone! I never put automatic upgrades because, in the past, it happened to me that Windows would simply reboot itself out of nowhere when I was doing some work. After that, it said that it installed some updates. Automatic Off.

When that window popped up, I had closed my PC and when I re-opened it, and MSN opened at startup and tried to log in, TA-DA you have to upgrade.

At first, I tried running a VM with XP (knowing that XP wasn't affected) but I screwed up the hard drive (only 2 GB... had needed 4) and I didn't want to restart. So, I just went for an alternative.

Laterz.

IC what you mean by XD:
"A symbol with X being the eyes and D being the mouth, to make a seeming of the person having squinched eyes and a mouth wide open laughing. This is usually used to replace rofl, as the X for eyes indicates that they are laughing so hard they may have fallen off their chair. Usually used in mmorpgs and chat lines." --UD

Um.... ssssomething like that <_<

I use it to replace LOL, actually, because I am laughing so hard that my eyes are closed :)

Anyway, back to the topic... I was actually excited while WL2011 was in beta... I didn't mind the various glitches and bugs, and had thought that they'll fix up the options a bit and just enhance the usability of v2009... Instead, it became a big disappointment: first of all, because I don't really use that much social networking. Yes, I have Facebook, but that's about it. Twitter, MySpace, and b******t like that never interested me enough, so the big bulky social part of the Messenger is just disgusting, because none of my friends actually use Windows Live as a social network. So to me, the whole concept of v2011 messenger is, if nothing else, unneeded.

If your question is directed at me, I was joking that if the 2011 version of Live Essentials was unneeded and undesired my most people, it would be unused and people would stick with (or switch back to) 2009/2010. By making the 2011 version of the popular Messenger client mandatory, Microsoft insures that the 2011 suite will be used by most, something presumably they want to have happen.

WLM 2011 is the mail program...not the entire suite. That being said, it works very well. WLM lets me sync my e-mail, contacts, and calendar across three computers. It's been years since I knew anyone who communicated via IM programs, but if that was the case, I'd be using something like Trillian, as mentioned above. If you want one entity to be professional....keep them separate.

WLM = Windows Live Messenger >_> not Mail.
Considering IM is kind of a dated, dying method of communicating, and given the popularity of Windows Live Mail on these forums, WLM means Windows Live Mail, as mentioned above. In the future, showing attitude at people taking time to post in your thread isn't the best way to get solutions...especially when you aren't specific enough with your questions in the first place.

I am someone who uses Im as a daily part of life. I use it to communicate with co-workers about things that dont need to be on out corporate email, and hold conversations that are too short to deserve a call but will require a quick response and several correspondences than could be done by the time the send and recieve is done on both sides.
