Microsoft's new search engine, Bing, has managed to take the third spot in the top search providers for August 2009. Bing was launched back in May 2009 and has managed to snatch 10.7% market share with 1.1 billion searches in August 2009.

Bing has a month-over-month growth of 22.1%, becoming the fastest growing search engine in the top 10 search providers. Bing also just released Visual Search earlier this week that returns thumbnail images using Silverlight. Microsoft will also be releasing Bing 2.0 sometime in the near future, adding new features to the decision engine.

Google still takes the top spot with 64.6% total market share, an increase of 2.6% over last month, generating almost 7 billion searches for August 2009. Yahoo! search comes in second place with 16.0%, a decrease of 4.2% over July 2009, generating 1.7 billion searches.

Microsoft has recently signed a deal with Yahoo! to make a Bing powered search, with a ten year term, merging the two technologies to create a single search engine to compete with Google.

AOL and Ask.com search fall into the fourth and fifth spot. AOL brought in 333 million searches, while Ask.com only received 186 million.

Thanks to dhan for the post.

its a small percent but I would say that Bing is moving along rather fast...3-1/2 months later and already 5%? I would imagine this is making Google take a step back...although they still have relatively nothing to fear

From the data I have bing is only making small advances and that is at the expense of the smaller engines such as Yahoo and AOL.

Meanwhile, Google are about to roll out "caffeine" which is their next generation search technology which (I have had a play with this) does provide even better more relevant results than their current engine.

I know very little about the internet marketplace so seeing a market share growth after only a few months seemed to me to be a success...but maybe not so much. As far as this new technology from Google how were searches redefined in a better way? As in if you could rate in on a scale from 1-10 how much were searches improved...IYO?

From my tests caffeine consistently produced more relevant results with a massive reduction in spam sites, I would say on the 1-10 scale the improvement is a 6.

Going back to Bing, when you take into account that it is the default search engine when windows is installed, and every time you install an MS product these days it wants to change your default provider to Bing, then it's a total failure!! given the placement of the product in front of millions of windows users the market share is a disgrace.

I forgot about the default search provider being set to Bing. Most users will skip right through the IE8 setup and leave it as such which would account for most of the adoption rate so far.

With that in mind I would be inclined to agree with you John...

What is Bing?

Honestly, I just naturally type google when i want to search. It's something that my fingers just do now. Right now, Bing is 100% irrelevant to me.
