Hi there I have a dell xps 720. I recently switched my installation to a new hard drive and i didn't quite proceed correctly. So, I decided to do just a fresh install. However, I am having a problem with my computer's bios and built in boot menu. When I go into the bios, the system will freeze after a few seconds and when I try selecting a boot device it will freeze after a few seconds as well. Bios version is A04 if relevant. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Unplug the disk and see of BIOS still freezes, if so you have a bad motherboard, if no you have a bad disk.

Is there any chance it has anything to do with the ram or battery in the motherboard?

I personally doubt it, if your bios is freezing that has nothing to do with a hard drive. It runs from a internal chip on your motherboard. Its your motherboard. OLDMX is incorrect.

You could try downloading a bios update and then remove the cmos battery on the motherboard. Wait a little bit with no power attached to the board, then hook up just the critical components, and then perform the bios update. Its possible the bios became corrupted somehow. If you have any further issues your better of rma your board.

Hi jerguy1928,

I see an urgent update for BIOS listed on our site for your system:

Driver Details | Dell US

Please download and install this BIOS. Remove any USB devices connected to the system and check if the system still freezes in BIOS.

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.
