Hello,

I have a problem when booting up Windows 7.
When I boot, I see the 4 particles, but after that, i get a black screen with my mouse cursor, but that's all.
If i wait for about 7 minutes, i get the login screen and everything works fine.
I haven't installed anything or done anything that could cause this.

Is this normal? I hope not because i hate waiting :P

I have read some other topics that seemed to be almost the same problem as mine. Some say you have to get a new videodriver. have done that, didn't
work. Restoring to a restore point didn't work either.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards,

EDIT: Forgot to say, it is a dual boot (win xp/win 7) (maybe usefull information:geek:)

Look at the time of day when you boot. I suspect that your PC is looking/waiting for a network resource and not finding it.

My sister has a similar problem with her HP Pavillion Laptop. She gets the black screen and mouse pointer, but Windows doesn't load. She can get into Safe Mode but anything she does still doesn't allow the computer to get past the black screen on boot. She tried Restore from Safe Mode, but again on booting up she only got the black screen again. HP have been unhelpfull.

I've had the same symptoms several times, with different PC / Laptops, and even with Vista!
A quick shutdown - restart usually cures it though...

Do you have an a/v installed that may be doing a scan at start up?

I have AVG Anti-Virus Free installed on my computer.
I have it installed on another computer, and with that one i don't have the problem.

So i gues it is not the solution...

Thanks, there isn't anything attached to the Laptop. I posted earlier that I had a similar problem after flashing BIOS after which my computer would only boot after I removed one of the RAM modules. After flashing BIOS again with an old version I found that I could but all the RAM back and the computer worked fine again. BIOS haven't been flashed on the laptop but I am wondering if it could be a similar problem. I have noticed a lot of complaints similar problem with HP Pavillion DV 6700 Laptops not booting.

Perhaps. It depends on wheter AVG enables start up scanning as default (I know Avast does).

It may be worth a quick double check as some A/V's have the start up scan enabled on installation.

Has Seven always been slow to load (since the first use), or is a recent occurrence?

Smarteyeball: 1. How do i check if AVG enables start up scannning?
2. Since i installed 7 it worked great (no black screen), but after a few days it suddenly happened every time i start 7

aem: I have 512 MB RAM... this should be enough?

Smarteyeball: 1. How do i check if AVG enables start up scannning?

Have a look through AVG's options. It could be called rootkit scan, memory scan on system start up, or something similar.

2. Since i installed 7 it worked great (no black screen), but after a few days it suddenly happened every time i start 7

So if no external hardware has been added (external hard drive etc), then it's fair to say that it's a software issue - which I think you may have already guessed :)

Does the machine start in safe mode okay?

Does it tkae a long time every time you start, or only on the first boot of the day?

(If it's only once, then it sounds like a scheduled service. If it's every time then..... it's something else ;)

aem: I have 512 MB RAM... this should be enough?

Not really :( But it shouldn't cause a sudden delay while loading Windows.

Hmmm 512MB is your total system RAM? I'd say that could be one of the issue why it takes a while to boot up. Once boot up, how does the system run? can u give us the performance stats?

Btw, does Xp also takes abit of time?

Not really :( But it shouldn't cause a sudden delay while loading Windows.

It's not a sudden delay, it's a delay to bring up the desktop, i would think at this stage the system is loading and configuring the desktop.

Try testing xp mode with 128Mb vs 256mb vs 512mb and see the difference.

I can boot in safe mode, but i don't know if i have the black screen also... i would have to test it.
I get the screen every time i boot my pc... so not only in the morning or something.

aem: what do you mean by performance tests?
XP boots fine, no delay

I get the screen before i log in.. so it can't be the loading and configuring of the desktop?? or am i thinking wrong...

Windows 7 is running fine when it is started..
It could be the RAM problem... but isn't it strange that in the first few days i have used windows 7, i didn't have the black screen problem?
