Solved Black screen of death after registry defragmentation

hi all,

I recently installed iolo system mechanic and decided to defrag my registry, it prompted me that i needed a restart in order to do so, so i did and on startup it did the defrag then restarted again when it was done but the next time i got to the black screen with the cursor just before the login screen loads it just stayed on that screen. I'm able to get to my system repair screen on restart and get to the command prompt but I dont know what do from this point, any ideas? Help would be much appreciated

Please stay away from iolo's products from now on, they were good when I used Windows 98 .. that was a very long time ago!!

Thank you for the reply Corazon but the procedure they describe there doesn't seem to be possible without a windows 7 installation cd because I can't get to the same recovery prompt they talk about

Kinda have to agree with Schroff87 - even back in my Win98 days when I tried System Mechanic myself, it had a few rather glaring bugs.

Hmm, the link refers to the Windows XP recovery console. Windows 7 handles it a bit differently, you would boot from the DVD and select Repair, then go to the command prompt. There is no pressing 'R' anywhere.
You do need your Windows 7 setup DVD either way...or any other bootable disc that lets you access your installed system offline, for example Hiren's boot CD.

I would stay away from any registry defrag/tweaking utility of any kind. Windows 7 handles the registry on it's own very well and most of the time they just leave you with problems.

yaa i definitely learned my lesson on that one, now i just needa know how im gonna fix it i've got hiren's bootCD loaded but now what?

You may be able to use the file transfer Wizard on the Paragon Boot disc to replace the corrupt registry hives.

In "C:\Windows\System32\config" you will see these hives:

Components
Default
Sam
Security
Software
System

Try replacing those with the hives of the same name from:

"C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack"​
