Format Licensing on Schedule to Commence Summer 2015​

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced completion of the Ultra HD Blu-ray™ specification and released the new logo that will delineate Ultra HD Blu-ray products. The Ultra HD Blu-ray specification, which represents the work of global leaders from the consumer electronics, IT and content creation industries, will enable delivery of Ultra HD content via Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc to the rapidly growing number of UHD TV households.

“For years, Blu-ray Disc™ has set the standard for high definition picture and audio quality in the home. Ultra HD Blu-ray will do the same for UHD home entertainment," said Victor Matsuda, chair, BDA Promotions Committee. “The technical capabilities of Blu-ray Disc, in particular its significant storage capacity and high data transfer rates, will enable the delivery of an unparalleled, consistent and repeatable UHD experience."

The completed Ultra HD Blu-ray specification addresses a range of factors, beyond simply increasing resolution, that will significantly enhance the home entertainment experience for consumers. In addition to delivering content in up-to 3840x2160 resolution, the Ultra HD Blu-ray format enables delivery of a significantly expanded color range and allows for the delivery of high dynamic range (HDR) and high frame rate content. Next-generation immersive, object-based sound formats will also be delivered via the Ultra HD Blu-ray specification. Additionally, with the optional digital bridge feature, the specification enhances the value of content ownership by embracing the notion that a content purchase can enable the consumer to view their content across the range of in-home and mobile devices.

The specification also mandates all new Ultra HD Blu-ray players be capable of playing back current Blu-ray Discs, giving consumers access to the vast library of more than 10,000 titles currently available on Blu-ray Disc.

Licensing of Ultra HD Blu-ray is scheduled to begin this Summer. The BDA is working closely with industry leaders in the authoring, testing, certification and replication industries to develop the tools and process needed to ensure interoperability between players and software and to facilitate the development of a robust ecosystem to support the hardware and title launch of Ultra HD Blu-ray.

Fail.....People are not buying discs anymore they are dowloading and streaming. This is gonna be even less successful than the traditional blu-ray.

I agree. Who needs a disk? And, on the go, who can even use a disk?
I've never purchased a Blue Ray. I don't even own a player.
And it's been many years since I purchased a DVD.

Odd note: At Barnes and Noble last weekend we saw a display of classic 60s and 70s LP disks. Yes, vinyl. I guess disks aren't completely dead.

I didn't buy any, though. Who needs vinyl? But the covers brought on a dose of nostalgia.

An act of pure nostalgia pretty much, the music industry would rejoice if vinyl become the only format again for everybody, no piracy and they could charge a lot per vinyl $$. A dream only.

I don't think that streaming an 100GB UHD movie is going to be practical for many people (that's >100Mb/s continuously for a 2 hour movie that size).

We get an absolute maximum of 6Mb/s at our house.

Rentals are still going well too for many without high speed internet.

Some of us still use discs because you guys with Netflux, Hoodoo and game streaming are using all the iNet bandwidth. Many of us in rural areas are barely off dialup speed, still watch broadcast TV and still spin a vinyl or two. Check my specs for the turntable.

I'd like to see the entire iNet limited to 2-3Mbs download speed until the quality of service is level across all ISPs. Perhaps that would get folks angry enough to push for better service in the rural areas. No one should get better service (speed) on the net until the same is available to all. That's my rant for today.

People don't stream 100GB, you stream a rip at high resolution. Even Apple sell movie rips not the full disc.

Me personally i watch a movie generally once then i delete it. I have a few exceptions of movies that i own on blu-ray like Melancholia, eyes wide shut or poltergeist but i can count those with my fingers.

We have two Blu Ray players and one has never even been used. The one in the lounge gets used once in a blue moon when the girls want to watch one of their Monster High DVDs and that's about it. Everything else is streamed or USB.

Actually I stream a lot Netflix, BBC, UK Ch4 and watch DVD and Blu Ray. I have a download speed of 100mbs but still actually like to have the CD and DVD / Blu ray in my possession.
Most of my PC's have a Blu Ray player in them and all have DVD burners.Three have Blu Ray burners which I use to make back ups of stuff and I also ripped a few movies to remove the protection as it was ruining the viewing of the movie, Star Wars Collection I'm looking at you.
I suspect it may be my generation. Thinking about it, I went to see the Star Wars original movies at the pictures, I bought them on VHS Widescreen, I bought the re-released versions on VHS. I went to see the new trilogy at the movies. I bought the whole lot on DVD, then I bought the whole lot on Blu Ray. Now I am done. I suspect when the new Star Wars film is out I shall go and see that and also buy the Blu Ray.

Sure, some people love to have the physical stuff which is completely fine, me, for example, i still love and buy music CD's. But the majority of the people are not going that way anymore...

Why do people buy a luxury car instead of a cheap compact car? They both will do freeway speeds & get you there.

Why do people buy huge homes in high rent areas when it's far more economical to live elsewhere?

Why buy an Apple Watch for hundreds when there's plenty of watches for $10?

For whatever reason that justifies buying the luxury car, huge home or Apple Watch I would, in a similar way, justify the need for one to buy UHD BR over Blu-ray & DVD discs or streaming media. UHD Blu-ray will out perform every format many times over in terms of picture quality & sound. To some this is very important, to others not at all. So what? To each their own!
