Looks like your ATI display driver is causing your problems. I would try a different ATI driver and see if anything changes. Both dmp's are pointing to the same problem. Either the driver or the ATI software seems to be causing this problem. What are the GPU temps like before the crash?

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating. Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU. Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference. If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling."

This has something to do with the display driver or the ATI software.

Do you by any chance have Riva tuner installed?

For the purpose of trouble shooting, I suggest you completely uninstall Kaspersky using the uninstaller > Info > Tool Replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials and make sure Windows Firewall is turned on. Kaspersky has been know to cause BSOD's on some Win 7 systems. Generally the 2010 version is good; but I suggest you eliminate that as the cause. You can always reinstall it.

Let us know if this works or not.

Sounds like solutions and predicted causes are all over the shop. Perhaps this error code is a very general one, that could be caused by a whole lot of things.

Does anyone know what BCC code 116 means?

I got it after rebooting from a disk freeze. The freeze seem to have been caused by a sort of catch22 race condition that made my computer completely un-communicative.

( I was going to save a file, started to change the name of the file I was saving to, and then decided to open my browser which had earlier crashed. I think that the startup of the browser wanted to use explorer, which was being used by the rename, so the browser could not start, nor could I return to the rename. )

So I did a hard shut down with the power supply button. The next time I started up, I got this error code.

I think that it may be caused by a file system error on my C drive so I have scheduled an error check.

Other things that are probably irrelevant...I had just uninstalled a lot of Windows Live related stuff on C. Also the display driver/temp/cpu speed crash-due-to-load type of thing may not be completely irrelevant, since the blue screen may have occured when I went to watch a youtube video.

It seems that we have a long way to go before solving this one. The below is my full error message.

BCCode: 116

Okay on another thread
http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/113958-bsod-bccode-116-a.html
someone is asserting, quite categorically that
"Bugcheck 116 is an attempt to restart your video card after a fail."

Perhaps my freeze caused some corruption on the C drive in the area where my video driver is held. I am looking at my Nvidia Controller to see if there is a way of updating drivers from within that. Yes, the first item in the right hand window is "Download drivers and software." Updating drivers should not hurt? Perhaps I shoudl do that disk check first.

The disk check of the C Drive went smoothly during the reboot required by the driver install. No errors were found.

I am very glad I updated my video driver. Until now my computer (monitor?) had been making strange rapid clicking noises as I moved my mouse, like it were struggling to keep up with the mouse movement. Now the display is stable and silent. I would recommend video driver updates to anyone, especially if you can do it with a few clicks from the maker site with googling for drivers and or using special driver deletion software.

This thread about the BCC:Code 116
http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/92807-bsod-bccode-116-a.html
refers to this very knowlegeable thread which is, I would say, the definitive BCC code thread
http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lo...op-0x116-video_tdr_error-troubleshooting.html
It points to the fact that a lot of things can cause a video card problem, such as a corrupted disk or corrupted system files. I am now going to try a system file scan SFC.EXE /SCANNOW
which was ignored completely!

I have not had a bsod for a while. My noob conclusion advice is scan system/C drive files and do a display driver update, before suspecting hardware problems (dust, heat etc).

I have exact problem, except I have NVidia, and it happens only after I come out of sleep. Must fix it before it happens
