Blue Screen...

Well I am having a blue screen problem. I am almost sure it has to do with my video card but i would like a second opinion as well as possible ways to fix it.

I am currently running

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
I purchased a computer similar to the one i am currently using 2 moths ago. However I had the same problem and I exchanged it with this one less than a month ago. Windows 7 came pre-installed with the computer.

I could be wrong on this but I believe the blue screen was logged only once even though it happened a few times. Also sometimes I get a distorted screen and the computer freezes but no blue screen or error log(as far as I know).

Well I hope you can help me and thanks in advance. If you need anymore information just tell me.

Thanks again,
Neil

Hi Neil

This one was caused by Symantec and your video driver.

Please remove SYmantec and update your video driver. Replae SYmantec with Microsft Security Esentials and the win7 firewall.

When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product | Norton Support

Thanks for your reply.... really Norton? that surprises me a bit... so glad it was only a trial :P

Ok I'll do what you said with he anti virus.

Just a question with the driver upgrade. I'm probably going to sound stupid but when i go into device manager which one is exactly the video card?

Also I will be fully uninstalling it and replacing it with a different one or the same one?

Thanks again,
Neil

Ummm a next thing. The problem has seemed to taken a turn for the worst.

I had a crash where my sound went all messed up and then a black screen. My monitor even went to sleep even though the computer was still on but the screen showed nothing.

So after I turned it off I had to unplug it and wait 5 mins before turning it back on. If I didn't do that the monitor would only show a black screen.

So after it started it I got a different blue screen message(something to do with services) within 5 mins. It restarted itself and this time I went to safe mode. Within 10 mins the computer completely froze. After 15 mins of waiting I turned it off. Tomorrow I'll try to get an updated zip on here. But I'll be hard since it seems I need to be a time limit.

If you have any suggestions in the meantime I would appreciate hearing it.

Btw as I mentioned before this is my second computer that has had this problem. The first one I had we tried to clean reboot it but it didn't work. So I'm guessing that's not a solution. Anyways I hope to hear from you guys soon.

Thanks again,
Neil

Okay I managed to get the updated thing up before my computer went to the blue screen again. I hope it helps to identify the problem(s)

A next question. When i use driver sweeper I see a number of drivers available for sweeping. I am assuming i leave the sound and mouse alone but do i remove everything else which would be

ATI-display
NVIDIA-Chipset
NVIDIA-Display
NVIDIA-Physx

Thanks in advance,
Neil

I do not mean to sound rude or anything but it has been about 24 hours since someone besides me posted here. I am in desperate need of help and would appreciate it a lot if someone could help.

Neil, it is best to update your drivers from the websites rather than through Device manager or Windows Update.
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads
- - To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

What ZigZag is saying is to run Driver Sweeper only for your video drivers. Then download the latest driver from the appropriate website to your desktop and install it.. You might want to go to the website first and make sure you can locate the driver you need; then run Driver Sweeper. Download the updated driver, unzip and install it.

Usually driver packets come with an .exe file. Click on that .exe file and it will install the driver. If a packet does not include and .exe file, you will have to update through Device Manager. Open Device manager > expand Display Adapters > right click on your display adapter card and clcik on Properties > click on the Driver tab > click on Update Driver > select Browse my computer for driver software > navigate to the driver folder on your desk top.

When you have updated the driver, reboot. I suggest you create a restore point before you run Driver Sweeper and install the new driver - just in case.

I hope this helps.

ok so eevn though it points to the video card I believe there is something else also. I updated my driver but now Safe mode is giving problems also. It is either freezing and i gave it 30 mins to respond before i shut it off or it freezes for a moment then goes to a black screen. The computer remains on, my monitor goes to sleep and my keyboard and mouse were somehow turned off?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Neil

Sometimes other things like antivirus and firewall programs can interfere with the video, as can outdated drivers. This is why ZigZag started with Symantec/Norton and drivers. I would have exactly that, too.

Since you are now having trouble in the Safe mode, I suggest you test your video card with Furmark following the instructions in this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100356-video-card-stress-test-furmark.html. Monitor your temps while test. Post back with your results.

Okay thanks for your replies. In the end I ended up sending my computer for repairs. It came back yesterday. However, Today i received 2 BSOD. I have enclosed the updated files you need. Both times it happened while i had the computer in locked mode(don't know if that means anything) so i did not actually get to see the actually error screen but got the report of it when i started my computer back.

I hope you can spot something and I can be rid of this problem once and for all and you will not have to see me asking for help again :)

Thanks in advance,
Neil

That 's a bummer having crashes right after getting your computer out of the shop. Do you know what the tech checked or did? Both dumps are error code 1E and do not point to a specific cause.

The dump indicates a driver is to blame; but it does not give us the driver. Your drivers appear to be up to date. Did you run Furmark to test your video card before you took your computer to the shop? If not, I recommend that you do so: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100356-video-card-stress-test-furmark.html. Post your results.

Next, I suggest you test your RAM Memtest. Follow the instructions in this tutorial:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html. Run Memtest for at least seven passes; this will take 6-8 hours. Post back with the results.

oh also just curious. How long does the video card test take?

Not long. You watch your temps and when they level off, you can stop the test. If you get artifacts, you can stop the test.

You can press the Escape key to to stop the test. Once your temps level off and you are not getting errors or artifacts, you can assume the graphics card is OK. You do not want the temps to go higher than the recommended maximum for your card.

Okay so i stopped the mem test after 15 hours since I needed to use the computer. I was at 16 passes and 0 errors. So i think the memory is fine then? I'm still not sure about the video card test since i did not see any results...
