Several of us have emailed Microsoft requesting clarification on the SYM errors. No reply yet (except noting info passed on to symbol people).

what does this mean?

What type of problem is it? I am fairly limited in my technical skill when it comes to this level of the computer.

Thanks Again

additional information

There have been no crashes for 4 days and I have not had my WD external hard drive hooked up for 4 days. I went to their support site and they cannot guarantee that it will work with windows 7 but they think it will because 7 uses the same drivers as vista . Does this look like the culprit?

You should not need any drivers for the WD external USB drive. It is PnP... right?

If you are installing a backup app (like Maxtor's One Touch, for example) - you are almost guaranteed to BSOD as the majority of those backup apps were written in the XP-era and do not run properly under Vista or Windows 7.

The age of the WD drive may be a problem, but I don't think so as I have external USB drive from 2007 that works fine under Windows 7 x64. I just plug it in and copy files from it or to it.

WD drive

My drive is firewire, does that make a difference? The drive seems to function most of the time, that is it always shows up in "my computer". I did not install the backup software that came with it, so as you said it is plug and play.... at this point its 5 days without a crash with it unplugged. I will tryin plugging it back in and see what happens.

Doesn't it have a USB connection in addition to firewire?

If so, I would try USB connection and see if it makes a difference.

usb connection

I disconnected the firewire and am using the usb connector, no crashes in 2 weeks. Could it have been that simple? Why would this cause a crash?

Thanks

yes absolutely :)

the firewire drivers may need to be updated or rewritten or may even be a little known conflict very specific to your hardware configuration .............

I am not sure if they are windows or third party drivers but if you want to debug it first port of call would be contact the manufacturer of the drive and motherboard with your findings :geek:
