Bootmgr.exe missing... mpio.sys missing or corrupted. Unable to boot

I just got a computer for free, a Dell Studio 1555. When I got it, it would try to boot, then come to a screen that said that bootmgr.exe was missing. Sometimes I got a message that said something like mpio.sys was corrupted or missing. I have a Win 7 disk, so I put it in and tried to repair the installation. Each time I ran it, it said that the repair had failed. I tried to reinstall windows 7, and It made it to the first restart in the process. It showed the "Starting Windows" screen, but the colors of the windows logo never appeared, then I got the missing bootmgr screen. I decided to install Ubuntu and see if that worked, and it did (I installed it alongside the Windows installation). It was Ubuntu 10.04. I thought, "OK, so i'll just use this as a Linux machine"...and I decided to go back and reinstall so that I could use the entire hard drive. It never worked correctly again. Each subsequent time that I installed Ubuntu, I was told something along the lines of "Gnome Power Manager did not install correctly" and got a slow and choppy Ubuntu installation. Tried to install 11.10, and it failed completely. I opened the Ubuntu live from my usb drive, and opened the disk utility. I now cannot format, reformat, partition, or delete partitions on the drive. Is all of this just a case of a hard drive on its last legs, or is there something else going on here?

You should try and use the bootable Partition Wizard CD. It should show you something similar to the Windows Disk Management tool. If it works, you should be able to see all partitions, shrink them, deete them, extend them, format them etc.

If you haven't already, also try running a Startup Repair using the following tutorial.

If you can't format anything, your last shot may be using Darik's Boot And Nuke (DBAN). This can be put on a USB which when booted, completely wipes every hard drive recognised. So be sure to remove any other hard disk device or drive.

BOOTMGR Missing In Yuma

I received the infamous BOOTMGR Missing message and I have read and reread all the posts and information and suggestions as to how to correct the situation. It appears to that all suggestions require I get past the BOOTMGR Missing message but I can not get past that message. I've tried using the F keys, I started and restarted my HP 600 laptop windows 7 Pentium but I am stopped at every operation by the message BOOTMGR Missing use CTL ALT DEL to restart which leads me back to, you guessed it, BOOTMGR Missing. Please help...

Well Greg; it appears that you may have to do a repair install off the windows disk if you have the disk available. If it will let you; put the disc in and boot off the windows disk and when the screen to install windows comes up; there should also be something that says repair computer under it(near bottom left corner of screen). Hopefully that will help resolve the situation.

EDIT: nevermind above; i saw the rest of the posting for this thread and i see that the repair did not work. In this case you may have to do a windows re-install. Try re running the windows install and see if that does anything for ya.

F11 is the key to press in order to recover on that laptop.
Or put the disc in the drive and reboot the laptop to boot from DVD

I hope you did create or have the recovery disks.

I have tried just about everything mentioned. I have a recovery disc but when I try to run it, all I ever get is the BOOTMGR Missing press ctl alt del to restart. When I do the ctl alt del step, all I get is the BOOTMGR Missing message. I cannot get to the start button or anywhere.

Are you saying you get that message when trying to boot the CD/DVD? If so, then you haven't selected to boot from the CD/DVD.....in the BIOS, change the 1st boot priority to be the CD/DVD and try again.

I'm in the BIOS setting area and when I open the System Configuration section, I am presented with Boot Options. There is a a POST Hotkey Delay (sec) and it is set at <0>. The next one down is CD-ROM Boot and it is <Enabled>. Under that is Floppy Disc Boot and it is <Enabled>. Below that is Internal Network Adapter Boot and it is <Disabled>
That is all that is listed in the Boot Options area. No matter what I've done, I still get the BOOTMGR Missing along with Press CTRL ALT DELETE...Thanks so much for trying to help. Where should I go from here?

Have a bit more of a browse in the BIOS....is there an option to specify which order the CD boots? You should have an option to set the priority for the various boot devices....if you find it, set the CD to the first priority.

I believe the CD boot is set as priority and I exited BIOS by pressing F10 to save changes and then I tried to reboot and got the same BOOTMGR Missing message...

Some BIOS have where you set CD/DVD order, then another section to set HDD Boot Order, and there you then select CD/DVD first.

I am not sure what else to tell you. Try removing the Battery for 1 minute and then load up again.

Insert the CD/DVD, then reboot your computer. During boot, keeping tapping F12....a boot menu should pop-up giving you options from which device to boot.
