Solved BROADWELL E is Around the Corner and I am Concerned

Yep I guess you are right Mike but all the same a company like Microsoft surely would have the resources plus to track anything I would have thought they could do it quite easily just using IP addresses. After all they are quite open about using anyone's data with the latest OS.

I think as I might have mentioned why they will not release ISO's for 7 versions now is a bit of a mystery to me seeing that support for it is supposedly running out in 2018 - it simply doesn't make sense money is still money from whatever source.

I don't think I'd have any problem getting the X99-E WS any time I wished if I were willing to dole out the coin they're asking for it up here. In spite of the negative reviews most of the reviews seem quite positive and like with all flagship motherboards there are always bugs to work out. To be fair, I won't say I've never had a problem with Asus but after duking it out with some of their reps I've found that there is always someone there who will reason with you in the end. Myself, I just want the price to drop another 50 bucks before I buy from the retailer I have in mind. It would be nice to get the board for under 600 Canadian (tax and shipping included) but I don't see that happening any time soon. If I can get it for 600 plus tax I'll likely jump on it. In the meantime, I've been busy getting the family network up and running again after a surprise disaster struck. It'll be a while before I'm ready to engage in another build but I'm looking forward to it. Never a dull moment here on the home front. I'm back to using ye olde X58 with the i7 920 (Bloomfiedl) and rather enjoying it. Windows 7 Pro isn't half bad and the wife is having a swell time gaming on SSDs in RAID 0 on the the Sabertooth. Alas, she has my Win 7 Ultimate now as I slowly but surely inch my way toward Linux. Man, I cannot believe the crap Microsoft is pulling on people in the name of Windows 10 as they inadvertantly mess our "out dated" operating systems with each new update. Kind of reminds me of the Syndicate's definition of "insurance". :D Frankly I can't wait for the day when support for Windows 7 grinds to a halt because then Windows 7 will work fine for years and years. Some of you may have noticed this pattern. I've finally convinced the 8 year old to give her Win XP to her little sister. . . It's still working fine so it wasn't an easy sell. One more month and COMPUTEX will be on board with the new stuff and the price of ye olde X99 boards will start dropping methinks.

Windows 7 grinds to a halt because then Windows 7 will work fine for years and years.

Yep well I tend to agree with that I mean what could possibly go so wrong with the system that requires updates etc For example my new bank is still using XP!! and it is one of the major banks at that.

But I am still going to keep trying 10 and next project is a dual boot 7 & 10 on two laptops - I already have 10 on a small (250GB SSD) trialing it out with their default GUI and also with Classic Shell on the other laptop's drive. It still smacks of 8 with botox and a tummy tuck but away from the panels the main thing I do like is the speed.

Pity I have just found out that WLM is being discontinued with the awful Outlook mail as I said in another thread it has served me well for many years and I cannot for the life of me see why the change - although there is money involved of course.

I still have the Linux Mint MATE on another drive if it all goes belly up and I suppose I could get used to the Thunderbird mail for that matter.

What ya'll are sayin' about keys is true. "Legit" doesn't necessarily mean legal. And yeah... Odds are what most of these cats give you for a buck is only another dubious key. Hence my China connection where they state with all confidence that you can go to Microsoft Support with your problem (if you have one) because they already know their keys are both legit and legal NON-OEM keys. If Microsoft won't help you they will and the ISO they give you is directly from Microsoft. I won't be putting the link here though. I know that these are wholesale keys for Chinese builders. Thing is, support for Win 7 is history in about a year's time. Frankly, I'm looking forward to seeing that day because I know my Windows 7 will run perfectly after the "support" is gone. Just like it did when XP support died... Just like it did when support for Win 98 ended. lol My friend was running 98 online when support for Xp finally ended. So far the only o/s I ever saw fall short of this trend was Windows Mistake Edition and I have little doubt that Windows Keylogger Edition will follow suit. Meanwhile Linux is grinning like mad and waving at me across the table. I'm going to have to have a chat with that cat sometime soon. :D

(One more month to COMPUTEX) Hey did I mention that my Win XP is working fine?

ICIT I completely respect your right to use the Keylogger edition if that is what makes you happy. Myself, I wouldn't be making any purchases on non-supported operating systems (and certainly not on Windows 10) but I guess that's what Linux is for right? Banks put alot of stock in encryption but we all know at the end of the day not even encryption is 100% secure. The way I see it as long as you run good backups and keep the archives in RAID 1 you shouldn't have a problem with old operating systems unless they're like 20 years old. On my last build (for the wife) she dual boots to 8.1 in RAID 0 on SSDs for gaming and does the serious stuff on the Windows 7 flip-side. I still miss my Windows 7 Ultimate but this Win 7 Pro isn't so bad and this old Bloomfield chip can still pull it's own weight even on a klunk drive. Once I get my next build put together my 8 year old will be getting this old i7 920 and once again I will be DELL free. It was part of the deal when I finally persuaded her to let her 4 year old sister have the Win XP. Of course, this was only after I proved to her that her Spore could in fact install on Windows Vista. Meanwhile the 6 year old sits like a Chesire cat with her Win 7 U . She's totally obsessed with gaming. I gave her the Asus z97 board because it suits her. She hasn't had a problem with it yet and it's going on 2 years now for her. Still waiting for that motherboard price to drop another 50 bux though. True but without updates you are putting yourself at risk. You think that M$ puts out all those patches because they want to?

I'm having a terrible time installing Windows Vista as it is. It practically behaves as though they already ended support because the browser is already so many generations ahead I'm hunting for stand alones on Firefox. This is installation attempt #6 on the original unit with the original disc. All the bad stuff seemed to be happening after Service Pack 2. Full Support for Windows 7 has all but ended. That talk about 2020 is complete and utter nonsense. In fact, Windows Full Support for the next generation Intel chips running Windows 7 is done. Microsoft will only be addressing critical issues. I was already on the phone with a Microsoft IT trying to fix this problem and he told me that Support for Windows 7 has about a year left. On a side note I thought my Vista issue was fixed until it blue screened again and I completely lost the o/s. :::sigh:: :( Yes, I think M$ puts out all those patches because they want to. OF COURSE they want to. This is how their employees make their bread and butter and this is how they keep you on the line buying more products. Either way, Windows has you coming or going. It's a no-brainer.

I didn't say that hardware support would last until 2020 just that security updates from Microsoft end then. Hardware support and support for third party software unfortunately will likely end earlier as is the case for Vista. Now I don't know who you talked to but 7 is supported with security updates until 1/14/2020. It is support for Vista that ends next year. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?alpha=windows 7

I didn't say anyone should be making financial transactions on an unsupported o/s either. In fact I stated just the opposite. Support to me, means full support. Partial support is, well, half-assed support. I suppose some support is better than none but the support game is an old game and one game I'm getting tired of playing with Microsoft. Personally, I think the Windows 10 (Keylogger Edition) was the last straw for me. I realize anyone who wants to can turn off the (pun intended) WINDOW DRESSING if they wish but I don't think that many read the complete EULA that states that Microsoft reserves the right to turn it all back on if they wish to, any time they wish to, for whatever reason they wish. That, in addition to removing without notice any or all programs from my PC they deem "unneccesary", "pirated", or otherwise undesirable pretty much means that in exchange for them letting me use their "free" operating system I get to give them ownership of my PC for "free" and store it and run it for them for free too. What an awesome deal! :D (For Microsoft of course) Keep that web cam rollin' coz they reserve the right to that one too. (Just sayin') "Support" takes on an entirely new definition it would seem at the generous graces of Mighty Microsoft. One wonders if they aren't already in the insurance racket as well.

NOT ENOUGH ROOM TO LIST ALL HARD DRIVES HERE. Cuts me off at 5. Did you know that if you run a network you can scan your PC for viruses via other PCs using several different virus scanners? No virus scanner gets it all. This is narrows down the window for contracting a virus. By using multiple operating systems you can use different virus scanners with no risk of conflict.

So by full support you mean security updates, hardware support, & non-security updates? if so then updates went out the window last year. As for hardware Microsoft is not responsible for making that determination either. If intel decides that they don't want to publish new drivers for 7 anymore then that's their call and Microsoft can't make them continue their support. To me the most important aspect of what you call full support are the security fixes and those are continued until 2020. Second is AV software which we are also good on considering all of the vendors. After that is third party software which is also something M$ can't control. I agree with you on Windows 10 however we can't discount 7 yet. It still has some life left in it IMO. People like us might not want to have anything to do with M$ if they continue with their policies however that doesn't mean that we have to abandon them yet.

With MS' recent history of withdrawing support retroactively, I've decided against getting Broadwell-e and just get Haswell-e, if I can ever lay my hands on the MOBO I want (Asus X99-E WS/USB 3.1; curse Asus for not manufacturing enough of them!). When Sandybridge-e came out, which only supported PCI-e 2.0, most MOBOs for it were PCI-e 3.0 ready so upgrading to Ivybridge-e was a significant upgrade for most people.

From what I've been reading, the only thing one can gain from Broadwell-e over Haswell-e is more cores, which I do not need. Since MS (along with Intel) has already established a precedence for withholding full security update support for new CPUs unless people upgraded to Win 10 before the EOL of their current OS after people had already purchased the CPU and because I don't need more cores (I could do well with four cores instead of six if it wasn't for the reduction in PCI-e lanes), I afraid to get Broadwell-e when it comes out (unless, maybe, a better MOBO comes out with it).

Townsbg I'm with you all the way in this. I'm a Windows 7 diehard and I will continue to use it for as long as I possibly can. I certainly appreciate your optimism. Yes indeed it is people like us who will be among the last to drop our Windows 7 in lieu of the dubious tablet operating systems that seem to be all that Microsoft ever makes these days. I suppose one day desktops will also go the way of the dinosaur but I'm an old fashioned kind of guy and I'm pretty stubborn too. :D My four year old is currently enjoying animal videos on the internet as I type this and I can't help but to wonder how long her Win XP will hold out for her before I have to explain to her why she will need something different. So far, so good. That said, I am still convinced that the time to learn Linux has come because I don't see Microsoft changing any time soon and I don't feel like signing off my personal information to their meta data storage archives for a "free" o/s either. IF only they would develop a no-nonsense O/S much like Linux Mint and relinquish all the window dressing and ad-ware ... and spyware... and what could easily be regarded by some as malware (let alone the nagware) and keep it practical I would consider forking out a couple hundred bux for a real operating system. Hey, they could even call it Windows 9! Alas, I don't see it happening. I'm quite sure the big boys on the board saw the kind of numbers Mr. Zuckerberg is bringing in and indubitably they want a considerable piece of the action. Of course, in nowise do I imply that Microsoft is selling people's personal information... Yet.

Are you sure Haswell will give you all the bandwidth you need? Somehow I get the impression that you are prone to using applications that involve a good deal of graphics rendering. (Not sure how I got that impression.) I'm sorry to see you lost faith in the Broadwell E option but I respect your reasons. In fact, many of those reasons were why I opted for the Sabertooth (Z series) originally. I don't really regret my choice but it simply wasn't enough for me. I like options - lots of options. The E WS fits the bill for me in so many ways... Work Station, family server, media center and even a little gaming on the side. So far nothing is written in stone for me until after Computex. At this rate it's starting to look my next build won't be until fall after all. I'm sort of enjoying a sentimental walk down memory lane with this old x58 and I'm finding the nostalgia rather pleasant experience. Admittedly the young wife's Sabertooth rig (once upon a time my own mobo) is a good deal faster so I guess there's something to be said for Haswell as well. But I'm using an old Seagate Kiunk Drive and she's got Hyper X SSDs and 16 Gb of RAM running in RAID 0 so any comparison would be foolish. When I get some time I'll post some pix of her Pink Army Boot get up.

Heck, six cores on Sandybridge-e gives me all the bandwidth I need. The biggest attraction of the Asus X99-E WS/USB 3.1 is 12 SATA ports (14 if the two e-SATA ports on the rear aren't shared with two of the SATA ports, USB 3.1 (Gen 2) , more USB 3.0 (technically, it's called USB 3.1 Gen 1 now) and, effectively, 64 PCI-e lanes (x16, x8, x8, x8. x8, x8, x8) providing plenty of room for future expansion, such as add on cards for more USB ports, Thunderbolt (if that ever gets off the ground and the prices gets out of the clouds), more SATA ports (if I wind up using SATA Express ports for front panel USB 3.1 Gen 2), whatever new technology that comes down the pike, etc.

Other than ditching XP or taking it offline I strongly suggest that you create her a standard account that way she doesn't accidentally get malware on it. Keep for yourself a password protected admin account.

ICIT I completely respect your right to use the Keylogger edition if that is what makes you happy.

Well I am not real sure what the keylogger is except for it simple definition and as it turns out from this either one could have a keylogger Windows 10 Home vs Pro: What's the difference? - Feature - PC Advisor Now I am also guessing that keylogging is and has been going on for such a long time now and I saw recently that Google and Apple have been doing this for years. I think that we have to come to realise that sooner or later the whole world of computing is going to be ruled by those who put these systems out. Again I read recently that Linux is now under attack form malware where once we were given to believe it was so safe.

Both my main laptops are now dual boots - one turns out to be the Home version and the other the Pro because of what was installed on them at manufacture (both were bought as downgrades) and I have disabled just about everything that I feel my privacy would be compromised in both and I am not using any email in either. The version I am using to experiment with seem to be a lot better in terms of user friendly than the first OS to be released and also I run one in default GUI and one in the Classic Shell which I ma finding is not all that necessary.

Having said that I am still a 7 person (and will be for as long as it stays viable) as I still think it is the easiest GUI/system to use and I have long been opposed to what they are doing but am coming to realise that without trying new systems out first it simply does not make sense to poo poo any new system. In any case we are all so divided over what security we like to use when it is my firm belief that no security software is totally infallible and if they can break into governmental systems at will then what chance us. I am not say I am just lying down and giving up more that I am willing now to try and see what eventuates.

...Having said that I am still a 7 person (and will be for as long as it stays viable) as I still think it is the easiest GUI/system to use and I have long been opposed to what they are doing but am coming to realise that without trying new systems out first it simply does not make sense to poo poo any new system...

That's kindasorta like saying you have to touch the stove for yourself to see if it will burn you after many people have already told you it will burn you. I can understand your view, though, considering all the controversy over Win 10.

I'm concerned that what is going on with Vista will eventually start happening with 7. There is already a lack of hardware/driver support for new systems--it is even worse for Vista. Some third party software developers have already stopped supporting Vista including AV software. M$ apparently doesn't care about users updating Vista--there is an ongoing thread about users having trouble checking for and installing updates--since about when 10 came out. The M$ website (as well as others) don't support the newest version of IE on Vista. The list is building and it has become harder to use it yet there is still a year of security updates. When will all this start happening for 7? Any speculations? Might it happen sooner with 7? Vista is 3 versions behind so perhaps when another version comes out things will get worse for 7 users? We still have 4 years of support from Microsoft left however we might not have that long for everything else.

I always saw 7 as primarily a rebranding of Vista to overcome bad publicity. So Vista being treated like a red-headed step-child doesn't surprise me, and I'm not inclined to assume 7 will suffer the same fate.
