Solved Browser Download MAX Speed Test Differences

When I do a speed test at Speedtest.net on my desktop using 3 different browsers, IE 11 has a max download speed of around 254 mbs whereas on both Chrome & Firefox the max download speed tests at 356 mbs.

Why the dramatic speed reduction on IE 11 (note ping 9ms and upload speed 12 mbs are the same for all 3 browsers and WIN 7 is fully updated including its IE 11)?

The only explanation I can come up with is that Chrome and Firefox are using the newest technology and protocols.


With that said I honestly don't trust what any speed test site tells you -- Your ISP is well aware of who and what they are and give them preferential treatment to fool you into thinking that you are getting what you paid for.


When speed test sites first started years ago they would use the same files to test everyone and ISP's used to cache this file to make it faster, Now speed test sites usually use a randomly generated file to test you but I have read that now they just let the whole site run faster.

When I use the standalone Speedtest app, I get download and upload speeds in the 800mbps range, close enough to the 1gbps I pay for.
When I use speedtest.net on any browser, I'm lucky to get ±250mbps down and ±180mbps up.
Both speeds are accurate, calculated by using Networking in Task Manager.
I'm assuming that there's an awful lot of overhead and waste in my browsers' settings or add-ons, because another computer with Win 7 64-bit and no browser add-ons get the same speeds as the standalone app.
