EDIT2: Nope, uninstalling antivirus didn't help. The crash occured even without any antivirus software or AVG free antivirus.

Hi all,

I have a weird problem that suddenly surfaced itself a couple of days ago. It happens when I try to initiate a smb file transfer between my macbook and my gigabit ethernet port (the one that's attached to the motherboard). I cannot duplicate the problem otherwise, it has to be while transferring files via smb, not when I'm browsing the net or otherwise.

I tried swapping ethernet ports and instead using the second 100Mbps port that I added on, that I usually use for the internet. Same thing happens, after a random amount of time the computer decides to BSOD.

The weird thing is that I've always transfered files this way, for at least 1 year now. The only hardware changes that I could think of is a new 4-bay RAID 5 enclosure that I bought, or my updated ATI drivers which I tried to roll back, to no avail.

The problem is very similar to this one (http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/135179-bsod-stop-0x0000007f-0x0000000000000008.html), however, I do not have zoneAlarm installed.

One more thing, the computer totally crashes after it shows me the blue screen. It tells me that it's "initializing disk for memory dump" (or something along those lines), but it never gets to the point where it's actually writing anything to disk. So i'm not sure whether you'll be able to salvage anything from the BSOD zip that I compiled- just looking at the reports it seems the latest BSOD your program was able to take was from January.

My PC is a windows 7 x64, non-OEM. The motherboard, CPU and memory is about 1 1/2 years old and the OS installation is about the same age.

Thanks for any help in advance.

EDIT: In a leap of genius I tried uninstalling my antivirus program, avast, and that seemed to do the trick. On the other hand, I am crushed that my favorite antivirus program is causing this. I guess my question now is: what antivirus program should I use now? Also, how can I report this problem to alwil so that they can fix this problem?

I'm going to remove my dump files as I'm a paranoid guy.

EDIT: I think I fixed the problem (see below). I'm leaving my post as is so that others may benefit from my experiences.

Just in terms of BSOD's the hands down winner is Microsoft Security Essentials
I use it and ESET on my machines.

Unfortunately, removing avast antivirus didn't seem to fix the problem. The smb file transfer worked long enough to get my hopes up, but after 10 minutes or so it crashed and showed me the same error.

I installed AVG free antivirus and the problem persisted. In fact, the crash occurred as soon as I initiated the transfer, much like when I had avast installed.

I'm really stuck here. It doesn't seem that the problem is tied to a certain NIC controller because, as I mentioned before, I tried the same thing with my other 100Mbps PCI add-in card and it still BSOD'd. It doesn't seem to be related in any way to antivirus software, and every time it crashes, it isn't able to dump anything to HDD.

My only option here seems to be to not transfer any files via ethernet (as it worked perfectly using my notebook's wireless), or to try reinstalling my windows installation. Do any of you have any suggestions? I'm getting pretty desperate here, any help would be appreciated.

EDIT:

I tried doing a file transfer using Filezilla and filezilla server (using the FTP protocol) and it seemed to do the trick- no BSOD's no trouble. So it seems that the problem only occurs when I try to transfer files using SMB (windows file sharing) and between this PC and my macbook, peer to peer without any routers in between.

As of now this isn' a pressing problem for me now since I can start transferring files properly again but it'll be nice if I can get it fixed somehow... it's a bit uncomfortable to have this lingering problem lurking in your computer.

I would like to thank the members of this community for the time they've spent for me.
