Solved BSOD 1st time crash/Recently updated Nvidia Drivers

Hello,

If you could help with analyzing my files it would be greatly appreciated. I believe it may be related to my Nvidia drivers which were updated yesterday. I chose the "clean install" and everything seemed to be working perfectly. The issues I was having playing some games were resolved and still continue to work at present.

This is the first time I have encountered the BSOD and it asked for me to simply restart if this was the first time I had experienced this blue screen. Everything seems to be working, but if you wouldn't mind analyzing it?

Also, I had a computer programmer program this computer. It was new when purchased and every program and issue has been worked on by him. I may have the installation CD but will need to check at a later time if needed, as I have some things in storage.

Three issues

Asacpi.sys

The pre 2009 version of this driver is a known bsod cause.

Scroll down to the utilities category, then scroll down to the "atk0110 driver for windowsxp/vista/windows 7 32&64-bit" (it's about the 12th item down).

Download and install it.

Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers to check and make sure that the asacpi.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (not before).

SPTD.SYS

This is another large cause used by daemon tools and alcohol120

Remove any CD visualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.
They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Video driver reset BCC 116

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

First, let me just Thank you so very much for taking the time, I am so very grateful, for the help and such a quick response.
I followed your easy instructions and think I have completed it correctly. I just had a question regarding the P5K-VM download: I only saw this one;
P5K-VM Memory QVL dated 2008.07.21

I'm not sure if there was another date? This download was 34,33 (KBytes). I wasn't sure it was the correct file.

MY pleasure. Are you asking about the asacpi.sys driver update? I believe all the mobo's use the same driver and all you have to do is to pick the correct one for y our system.

Hi,
I confirmed that the asacpi.sys file is in the C: windows file as you advised, and it is.
I thought there may have been a second download or file I was missing.

I did however have an issue today when restarting my PC. I had a start up failure that start up repair attempted to fix. It tried to repair the issue automatically and stated it may be due to recent driver changes but was unable to repair it? I started windows normally, but I'm not sure what is still causing this. It asked if I wanted to restore to an earlier time but I chose not to, until I had a chance to seek your advice?

Is there something that I can do to scan what the real start up issue is...such as the Windows 7 start up manager?
I didn't think I should make any repairs until I understood what the problem was.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are BSOD'ing upload the DMPS. if not upload the event viewer logs


Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:


Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events
Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file here.

I followed your advice, and that of zigzag3143 and it looks like after removing ASO and Diskeeper, there are no more start up issues, and disk check found no issues.
