BSOD 90% after every windows start!

Hello everyone,

It has been around 2 weeks now since I installed Windows 7 and from the second I inserted the CD I had nothing but problems. The after loading the disc and starting the install screens, the computer would just stop along with the cd drive as if everything halted.
Anyway after several attempts and several freezes during install I managed to install them successfully.

Now I am facing the problem that my computer will not start properly without some kind of BSOD. However after one or two manual restarts, and maybe a system startup repair if i have the time, it works. Once I enter the desktop, from then on nothing is wrong. All is running smoothily, apart from yesterday. After playing suddenly it froze and restarted. The same goes for my USB Logitech mouse, that since the win install it freezes for a sec and you hear the USB sound, as if it was unplugged and plugged again.

Everything is updated, from Windows to all the devices with the latest updates. Even the motherboard BIOS.

The only changes I made before installing windows 7 was add a new 1TB hard drive, a sata dvd drive, and 4GB (2x2GB) memory sticks in dual channel mode.

I also noticed that even though my motherboard and the memorys i have run natively on 1066MHz, I had to reduced them to 800MHz otherwise I think my system would not load windows without a 100% error or BSOD.

I have attached the files I read that are needed.

Here are some info on my system:

Windows 7 Premium build 7600 x64 RETAIL
Hardware components, the oldest is 2 years old roughly
OS installation 2 weeks old.

If you have any suggestions or advice I would be very happy.

perfmon and MSINFO32 reports show issues with these devices:

Do you use a PS2 keyboard?
Is the second ethernet port deliberately disabled?
Please check Device Manager to see if these devices are listed as having problems there.

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Malware (read the details at the link)

Please remove Catalyst Control Center and Daemon Tools from your system as they can cause issues with Win7. Feel free to reinstall them, if needed, AFTER we're finished troubleshooting.

thank you for the help!

90% of the time I restart, I get a BSOD. So also because of the 1066 to 800mhz reducement that I had to do, I decided to remove the 2x1GB memory sticks and and go back to 1066mhz with my remaining 2x2GB. It has booted normally without error today. I will give it a bit more time to make sure and then I will put them back if there is a problem and run those tests you gave me. They seem very long.

I am using a Logitech USB keyboard, connected to a usb port. I have also downloaded and installed the latest hardware for it again.

The Marvel Yukon connection I have disabled intentionally since I am not using it. I have also downloaded the latest drivers and applied them to both Ethernet connectors.

I have also re-downloaded and re-installed the latest wacom drivers.

Fingers crossed it works now, but for some strange reason i think its the new memory i bought... hope Im wrong

If it BSOD's with the extra RAM, then run the MemTest with the extra RAM installed.
That'll tell you if it's a problem.

Then try the MemTest without the extra RAM - that'll tell you if it's the extra RAM/those slots that are the problem.

Right this is weird.
I hope I dont confuse you as well. I went ahead and run the mem test even though i stupidly forgot to uninstall daemon and Catalyst control centre. I quess its ok as i run the test from the cd before even windows loads.

Ok i have 4 slots (0,1,2,3) both running on dual channel 1066mhz (slots 0 and 2 have the Kingston 2GB sticks) (slots 1 and 3 have the 1GB Corsair XM2)
I run the test for some hours and I noticed a massive amount of errors on test 7 pass 1. I could not figure out which slot was responsible from the error reports. I choose selective test and select test 7. The second it reaches pass 1 errors start appearing everywhere.
Turned off the workstation and removed the 1GB sticks (slots 1,3). I run the test 7 and on pass 1 no errors.
I remove all memory and test one stick of 1GB on the first slot (0). Again test 7. no errors.
I try on the first slot again the other 1GB stick on test 7. Nothing. Wierd.
I put the both on the original slots when the errors occurred (slots 1,3). No errors
I decided to put the all again on the same slots as on the first run (slots 0 & 2 with the 2GB and slots 1 & 3 with the 1GB). To my surprise nothing, nada, no errors, WTH?
So i say okay then i will leave it on 1066mhz and just boot into win7. Again it boots with no errors..... is it playing with me or is it just me?
Anyway im gonna give it a couple of restart over the days and see how it behaves. Maybe there was dust on the slots? Dont know.
But I do know that my mouse is still playing tricks on me. It sort of freezes for 2 seconds and windows plays the sound of disconnecting and connecting a USB device. (my mouse is a usb one.) The funny thing is that its a simple mouse, so i have no drivers for it, but windows has detected it as a logitech mouse. I have only installed drivers for my keyboard which happens to be the same brand.

What do you think of all this weirdness?

Mixing types of RAM will cause all kinds of problems, especially RAM with different native clock speeds. I'm amazed you even got past POST.

I've also seen all sorts of problems with USB devices in windows 7 as well, probably caused by the fact that windows 7 is unnecessarily designed to stop USB connections during boot. ....probably in a misguided effort by Microsoft to prevent a successful windows installation to a USB HDD, because I have a working linux installation on an external HDD. I would recommend reinstalling windows with just the 2x2GB memory installed, as it would probably take less time to reinstall than it would to fix all the issues you'll likely to have

Sorry for not explaining correctly. All 4 sticks have 1066 native speeds. They are different brand but working on dual channels each. Even their CAS Latencies are the same.

0 - 2GB Kingston
1 - 1GB Corsair XM2
2 - 2GB Kingston

My very first experience with RAM was telling a customer that I thought that his motherboard was bad - but (luckily) suggesting that he get a second opinion. It turns out that the RAM merely needed reseating.
It saved the guy several hundred dollars!!!

As for the USB mouse, borrow a mouse from another system and see if it behaves the same way.
If it does, try other USB ports to see if it still behaves that way.
Let us know what you find out.
