I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. After allowing Norton Utilities to compact my registry my computer will not boot. It will run through most of the boot process before getting the BSOD.

Using a Windows 7 Repair Disk I tried using System Restore. It will let me choose from 7 different restore points but when it goes to the Confirm disks to restore" the check boxes for the drives are all grayed out and it says "You must enable System Protection on the drive"

I do not have a current System Image to use for recovery.

I have the Windows 7 repair disk, the windows 7 ultimate installation media and WINPE on a flash drive. all of them provide me access to a Command Prompt.

Is there a way to get System Restore working?

Is there a was to do a repair installation of windows so I do not lose the rest of the drive data (1tb)? if I can get to the Norton Utilities program through windows I could restore the proper Registry. Norton Tech Support doesn't have a clue.

Any input on how to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I already tried this. Refer to my second paragraph. Even though I have restore points, the system tells me I have to turn on System Protection to use them. System protection was on when the registry was corrupted.

How do I turn on System Protection from the DOS prompt so I can use the System Restore feature?

Hi SD,

when I was browsing Google for solutions I came across this post, it's a bit old so I cannot guarantee that it will work but you might want to give it a go, oh and the person who wrote this also said that you should only try this as a last resort.

It's post number 15 that could be a solution.

Thank you for your guidance. I was able to get running by using the easyRE software which allowed me to use a restore point.
Again thank you.
