Help Installing Norton Utilities 15

Hi All!
I am really stuck and Norton Tech Support does not seem to be able to make any progress. When I try to install NU-15 I get all the way to the "finish" screen and then the installer stops. If you look on Task Manager you can see NU.EXE is running with 50% CPU usage. If you "end process" NU-15 will bring up a screen allowing you to upgrade the software which it seems to do. I never get any further to the scan disk or enter the activation code. Click on the shortcut on the desktop and you get the spinning donut and then nothing. Check Task Manager and you can see NU.EXE running. NU.EXE will appear each time you click on the shortcut so you will have multiple listings on NU.EXE, one for each time you click the shortcut. I have removed everything I can think of that might cause a problem. I deleted Avast, Malware Bytes and Cisco VPN. Did a chkdsk /f /r /x which took all night. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling NU-15 several times with the same result. Yes I did frequent reboots, ran Ccleaner to check for registry errors and now I do not know what to do. NU-15 was running before and what I have not tried is running it in XP compatibility mode. Anyone have any ideas on what to try or how to troubleshoot this problem?

The PC Gods are trying to tell you something....
"Registry cleaners" and "optimizers" and "tweakers" such as Norton Utilities are -- at best -- worthless and -- at worst -- potentially dangerous for creating more problems than they fix.

If I were you, I would take the hint from your computer and forget about NU-15.
(CCleaner -- without the registry cleaning module -- or TFC would be a better, safer alternative, e.g. for temp files and other junk.)

Others here may have different opinions on this...

To a certain extent you are correct. If you have ever installed a program, decided it was not what you wanted an then uninstalled it and could see all the stuff left behind then cleaners would not be of any value. IMHO it is not the cleaners that are a problem, it is the uninstall programs that need to be better. At the same time, just how big do you want you registry to become? While I have not tried to install any other program the fact that this program will not install correctly what else will fail?

Most of the time, those leftovers are of no consequence.

IMHO it is not the cleaners that are a problem, it is the uninstall programs that need to be better.

Agree, but that does not mean that such "registry cleanup" tools are helpful.

At the same time, just how big do you want you registry to become?

Perhaps take another look at the quoted references, including the one from MS

Good point - a good test would be to see if you have trouble installing other programs.

If you have already been using such tools, the OS may already be damaged from what they have "fixed". Continued use may only cause further damage.
We really do not have enough info to say for sure.
What was the result of the chkdsk?
Have you run SFC /scannow at least two or three times?

It's up to each user whether or not to use such cleanup utilities.
If the articles I presented do not change your mind, then I won't be able to, either.

So I will defer to others on this emotional topic.

I would also suggest using Windows 7 built in Disk Cleanup.

My thoughts are simple.
Let the Anti Virus companies do what they do best, fighting virus and stay out of the cleanup and tuneup business. Leave those things to well established companies in those business.

I personally know of no Tuneup program that I would use.

Well, it's been awhile since I used any Norton product; last one being Norton Antivirus, and it was a hassle to uninstall. I ended up using Revo Uninstaller software to finally rid myself of any remnants of Norton.

You can give it a try and then reinstall NU, again.

No Norton for me, since they do not provide any solutions.
Their products were useless, even AV cannot be uninstall totally.
Lots of problems in their products.

I have found that any anti virus program is hard to uninstall completely.
Even when using programs like Revo or the uninstaller.

When you search the registry you will still find things.

I think the reason for this is; when running scans the anti virus program must look every where for infections, so it's foot prints are left every where.

As far as Norton goes; I haven't used it in years.
Some like it and some don't.
