Good morning,

I have an old laptop a HP pavillion dv6 1160tx (HP Pavilion DV6-1160TX Notebook (VF040PA) | Techbuy Australia)

that came preloaded with Vista. I upgraded to windows 7 64bit as I wanted to increase the RAM from 2x2gb to 2 x4gb. The upgrade to windows 7 went fine and then I purchased my memory

1 x 8GB KIT ( 2 X 4GB) DDR2-5300 DDR2-667 SODIMM (66-CJN) , 8GB_DDR2-5300, 8GB_DDR2-5300.

After installing it it didnt start up so I opened it and ensured it was seated correctly. It worked after that. Then I started getting BSOD on memory management on non page fault and lots of windows explorer stopped working error messages.

So after some research I formatted the machine and re-installed windows 7 ( with only one of 4gb of ram slots as when it came to expanding windows files it also froze. Installed worked fine, then BSOD again. this happened when installing windows updates , this time referencing a non page fault message.

last bsod was on ntfs.sys, i am running a chkdsk now. I am not a techie per say more of a database techie, so one of those who knows enough to be dangerous:confused:

Help

3 ideas for ya:
1-mobo chipset only supports 4gb ram max or 2gb max sodimms
2- new ram incompatible with mobo version
3-(highly unlikely) new ram sodimms flawed or memory errors .........

Thank you

The chipset says it supports up to 8gb , how can I find out what my motherboard is? I cannot see anything obvious in bios information. i did email the spec of my machine to the Ram suppliers before purchasing it, see below, it says it can handle 8GB. If I want to proove either one of your statements how would I go about this? I have tried to run memtest86 , by copying it onto a cd and booting from the CD but machine doesn't seem to want to boot from my burnt cd. I feel burnt too :(. What would you have done step wise when installing/replacing memory on a machine which used to be vista

Thank you for posting your specs. Found the problem. Sadly, you purchased/installed the wrong memory for your Laptop motherboard.

This is your chipset: Mobile Intel PM45 Express Chipset
This is the memory you need: DDR2-667 or DDR2-800
This is the incorrect memory you installed: 8GB_DDR2-5300

Motherboard memory requirements are dependant on the chipset. Details on your chipset can be found here: ARK | Mobile Intel® PM45 Express Chipset (Intel® 82PM45 Memory Controller Hub)

Note: If DDR2-667 sodimms are unavailable buy DDR2-800 sodimms as they are backward compatible to run at 667mhz.

Best of Luck.....
