Starting new thread as requested.

Had BSOD 124 a few days past. After checking the dump files it pointed to my CPU. At the time I as catching up on a old game (AC:BH) certainly not demanding by any stretch for my system , had well over 120 fps, not even much going on in game as I as getting a cuppa. Bit perturbing as I have been running Witcher 3 with no issues and that stretches my resources much more 50 fps at best during action sequences.

Ran the Prime 95 and in less than a 30 secs up to 70c , according to speed fan ,so I stopped the test as I have never seen it that high temp under load. The cores did pass the first torture test according to the info boxes.

Only stock cooling as never intended to have the PC under heavy load or if OC it later on ,improve cooling then. Until now has been cool, part of the reason I got the Haswell CPU was because they run cooler by design. The PC is clean and all fans are working as usual, ambient temp in room around 20c. Have not had any heat issues in the systems , under 2 year life.

Really just would like someone else view before I set off down the path of returning (all parts still in warranty).

Thanks in advance

hello Saturday. You have 1 dump file. I need you to fill out your detailed system specs

Please fill out your System Specs

   Information
Your System Specs will help us to help you, and doing it in this manner will make them available to all helpers in every post and keep us from hunting for them. We ask that you fill them out in as much detail as possible including Desktop or Laptop, Model number if it is an OEM computer and all components with the Manufacturer and Model number if possible.

If you will go to your last post and click the 'System Specs' in the bottom left of the post, you will find a link to update your system specs. Please fill those out in as much detail as possible, making sure to click save at the bottom of the page. If you would like to know what we would like, you can click 'My System Specs' at the bottom left of this post to see mine. If you do not know what your components are, this will help you accomplish this task. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

Code:
Use !analyze -v to get detailed debugging information.
[COLOR=red]BugCheck 124[/COLOR], {0, fffffa800e29e028, be000000, 100110a}
Probably caused by : GenuineIntel
Followup: MachineOwner

A bugCheck 124 is a generic hardware error. It gives no indication on which component it is. It can be a piece of hardware that has malfunctioned/died or it can also be a bad driver causing a piece of hardware to act as though it is dying. The last component I would suspect is the CPU.

I would suggest you uninstall any Gigabyte utilities you have installed. Also, please keep a constant check on your CPU and GPU temps.

open an elevated command prompt ( click start, type cmd in the search box, right click on the cmd entry and select run as administrator) in the black box that opens, copy/paste sfc /scannow. If you decide to type it, notice the space between the sfc and the /. It is a system file checker which will scan your system files and attempt to correct any missing or corrupt files. What we want are the results to say windows found no integrity violations. If it says files were found but could not be repaired, close the box, reboot and run it again, after opening the administrative command prompt. You may have to reboot and run it three times for it to repair all system files. If it can't repair them after 3 reboots, let us know.

Fill in that part of my profile , sry about that.

Re 124's I know it's not always the hardware listed and at first I thought it could be AC:BH as it was listed in the dump analysis as the process that was interacting at the time and it was the only software/driver change of late and the drivers testing I did showed no errors. However the CPU was running a good deal hotter than usual under load the next day . If it was fine the next day I would have put it down to a one off and let it be.

Roll on today and I cannot recreate the same effects. AC:BH no crashes. Witcher 3 for med load test , fine. Prime95 for torture, well cannot say something is fine under torture but no crashes and passed the tests it completed before i stop it again re heat concerns, drivers check again likewise no issues.

So now I scratching my head a bit. I know the tests are certainly not 100% infallable given the amount of variables and small sample set but it irks me not knowing the cause. If you know any more checks then let me know, I'm out of ones I know and the one you listed I already ran and it came back clean.

Edit. Helps if I say which checks. lack of sleep getting better of me. CHKDSK, MDSCHED, SFC , Diagnostics from OS disk, Prime 95, reinstalled various C++ runtime packages , NET frameworks and Directx. Windbg to check the dumpfile, looked over the event log. Will redo memtest86 overnight.

Edit again. Does anyone know/recommend something that can track heat longer than speedfans 10mins ?

I use Core Temp for CPU and Precision X for the GPU. You can use MSI Afterburner for the GPU and Real Temp works good for the CPU.

If you run memtest run it this way

Please Run Memtest86+

picture.php

   Information
Please download from this site only http://www.memtest.org/ in the middle of the page are the Download links, you can download the ISO.zip or the Auto USB Flash Drive installer.zip

Extract the Zip file. If you chose the ISO image, burn it to a CD using Windows Disk Image Burner or any Image burner you may have. If you downloaded the Auto USB installer, extract it, insert your USB 2.0 Flash Drive and take note of the drive letter. Run the installer, select the Flash Drive Letter, check the format box and press next. It will install memtest86+ to a flash drive. You can use either V4.20 or V5.01. Boot from your selected media. If you use V5.01 it will tell you to press certain buttons at the start, please press no buttons. The test will begin on it's own and continue to run until you stop it. It needs to run for 8 complete passes or until you receive an error. If you receive an error, stop the test. Even 1 error is a fail. Each pass tests a different part of the ram and each of the 10 tests in each pass tests something different. It takes a minimum of 8 passes to completely test the ram, more passes are better. It is quite a long test and will take several hours depending on how much ram you have. Due to the time length it is best to run overnight. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

For the GPU you can run Furmark, but keep a close watch on GPU temps. They will go extremely high and very quickly. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100356-video-card-stress-test-furmark.html Just let it run until the temps level out and stop rising. Watch for artifacts. If the temps get too high, stop the test. Ungine Heaven is another good GPU test and the one I use Heaven | UNIGINE: real-time 3D engine Just run the benchmark. AIDA is a good alternative to Prime95. But you have to run it for several hours, like you do prime95. It is a paid program but has a 30 day free trial. AIDA64 | The Ultimate System Information, Diagnostics and Benchmark Tool. I would suggest you look into a decent aftermarket CPU Cooler and change the thermal paste.

Thanks for that info. Core temp is a nice program and the ability to log over along time period is great.

Ok tests. Using my memtest86 rather than the + version came back clean but no harm in running the + version overnight.
Furmark - Leveled off at 80c in a minute maybe. No artifacts appeared.

Also re ran Witcher partly because I'm itching to do the wild hunt fight and to compare it to several days ago. Now I'm not getting great fps as I would expect , GPU is at 70c and CPU's are about 40c compared to them pushing towards 70c the day after the BSOD.

No shame in admitting it but I do wonder now if it really was just a quirk thrown up by the software and the effects the day after merely the cpu recovering from said quirk.

If you just want to wait and see if it was just a quirk, that's fine with me. Just be sure to get back with me and let me know.

Well I will continue to monitor the cpu but since the tests so far have come up blank and the symptoms have appeared to gone away I think it's best to put testing on hold until anymore symptoms arise. Thank you for your help.
