recently updated from 306.97 due to a bsod.

So it was running fine on 306.97 for how long?

How many BSOD did you actually receive with that driver and was that under load or doing 'desktop stuff'.

Basically you had an existing issue, updated an the issue still exists.

noticed that gpu temps were reaching 85-90c during high load. 40-45c during idle. wondering if it could be a temp issue.

running a 580gtx

Idle is fine. So too is load. Warm, but still fine. However if it's 100c+, then shut downs will occur. Never hurts to clean the fan and shove a bit of compressed air to blow bunnies of the heatsink (If it's a reference design cooler)

How long have you had the card and was it always running those temps?

ran 306.97 since 10/15/2012 without any real problems. temps were around the same. i wasnt monitering the temps when it did crash the first time and now for the last 7-8hrs I have been keeping the temp below 80c. cleaned out the box as well. hopefully it helps.

also i purchased the card on 4/10/2011...and yes the temps have always been in 75-85c in high use

well after a good dusting and installing EVGA precision software ive managed to keep temps from going above 92C. Still geting hotter than i would like but at least its not crashing as of now. Researching liquid cooling set ups that ill probally be throwing in there in the next few weeks. thanks for the replies and help!
