Hi there,

At a loss as to what to do now I have a very regularly BSODing laptop, which looks to be down to the installation of KB2670838.

I initially uninstalled a series of windows updates following the sudden onset of BSODs, but it failed to uninstall KB2670838, and after lots of reading, this seems likely to be the cause of the issues.

I'm not so much worried about the BSODs - given the apparent cause documented all over the place -however, what worries / frustrates me is that I can't uninstall KB2670838, with the errror "An error has occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled." After scouring google, I have got nowhere in resolving the problem.

I have tried System Update Readiness tool, but this comes back with no errors:

Code:
=================================
Checking System Update Readiness.
Binary Version 6.1.7601.21645
Package Version 18.0
2013-04-06 21:48
Checking Windows Servicing Packages
Checking Package Manifests and Catalogs
Checking Package Watchlist
Checking Component Watchlist
Checking Packages
Checking Component Store
Summary:
Seconds executed: 88
No errors detected

Would really welcome suggestions as to next steps. CBS zip attached.

If you need any other sys info, log files, memory dumps etc, please confirm, and I'll send across.

Thanks in advance!

Tom

Hello and welcome leplop find the date of the update and system restore to before that.

Now in the system restore it might not give you many dates but be patient and do what is in mt pic.

I am assuming that you know where system restore is - sorry but a lot of folks don't:)

Once you get back to before that point update in bits leaving out that particular one.

Tip never a good idea to download and install updates in large batches:)

Thanks guys (or girls?!)!

Frustratingly, I didn't have system restore set up; was one of my first routes to repair, but alas no luck!

Following the instructions...

1) Run SURT... already done, as mentioned in first post; no errors detected

2) SFC scan; fails...

C:\Users\sqg>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 88% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

...another hurdle to overcome?! [Having Googled this, I am currently running a full Malwarebytes scan, to see if this brings up anything malicious that could be stopping scan completing; will update you when complete]

3) Windows Update Error Codes... N/A as far as I can see; uninstalls don't seem to display specific errors

4) Log Collection... CBS.zip attached in first post

Cheers!

Tom

SFC usually fails because of corruption of critical files or registry entries.

There are no errors showing in the SFC output - which stops abruptly part-way through.

The rest of the CBS log itself is interesting....

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

Many thanks for the prompt reply, Noel. Much appreciated.

Will try your suggestions and will let you know the results.

PS, here are a few screens - the failure write dump perhaps being another indication of disk drive issues?!

Update...

Finished checkdisk (quite quick thanks to being a SSD @ 256GB, i guess).

Suffice to say, it fixed some bad sectors and other stuff. Upon reboot, I ran SFC, it completed (again fixing some errors), and rebooted fine.

Have now been able to uninstall KB2670838 without erroring out, and rebooted; so far, so good with no BSODs.

I'll obviously update should I continue to have problems, but in the event of my PC remaining back to normal, I'll just leave you with a big thank you and let you get back to other more important things!

Cheers!

I don't know lelop but at least that got it fixed - Noel will get back to you with what he wants I am guessing he means maybe both so in advance mate might be an idea to pack up both.

In answer to your other post mate every problem is important you were stuck and Noel got to the bottom of it as i thought the system restore would have be the go but alls well that....:)
