BSOD happens very often while browsing or playing games, error 0x124

SUMMARY:
Two nights ago I was playing Dragon Age Origins via Steam when out of nowhere my game froze up, made a buzzing noise, and BSOD (STOP Error 0x00000124). I had to manually restart as it did not do so automatically at the time. After the restart I was unable to reach the desktop as I was constantly hit with the BSOD. I turned off my computer and hoped that everything will be normal in the morning.

In the morning, the problem was still the same but I was at least presented with the option of the Windows Recovery Diagnostic tool. Upon reaching the desktop I discovered that my antivirus, avast! free anti-virus, had been deleted. This was done perhaps by the Windows Recovery tool. I thought everything was fixed, installed avast! Internet Security, and when I was again hit with the BSOD while browsing. Thinking avast! was the culprit I deleted it and tested my theory by playing Dragon Age again. I was able to play for a time, no more than 30 minutes before I was hit with another BSOD. The longest I have been able to play that game has been no more than an hour without error since the problem started.

Currently, I am able to immediately reach the desktop without any problems however the BSOD is still present. While browsing Facebook the other night, watching a Youtube video this morning, and even as recently as signing up to this forum to post this.

Someone had suggested that the problem sounds like my computer is overheating. That may be likely as I used to have my fan settings on quiet, even in gaming, but I had changed it to intelligent (more "aggressive" setting) to fluctuate with the temperature changes. Alas, I still experience the same BSOD problem.


I will list out a few things that may contribute to solving this problem.

• I believe Windows Recovery Diagnostic deletes Avast (both free and interet security version).
• I have overclocked my processor although it has since been restored to the default setting.
• My video card is still overclocked.
• CPU is currently at 20 degrees Celcius (internet browsing).
• CPU reaches 31 degrees Celcius while playing Dragon Age.
• Motherboard is usually at a constant of 30 degrees Celcius.
• Full virus scans have been performed only to come back clean.
• All hardware-related drivers, Windows Updates, and BIOS are, to the best of my knowledge, up to date.

I have:

• Restored the BIOS to its original values.
• Many fans cooling my system (three 200mm and five 120mm) so cooling may not be an issue IMO.
• Taken extra precaution and cleaned out all dust as well as clean and reapplied a new layer of thermal paste on the processor.
• Run a stress test on my system's memory via memtest+ for 3 1/2 hours. No errors found.
• Run SFC /scannow . No registry corruption found.
• Run chkdsk /f/r . No errors found however, my screen goes black and doesn't show what is happening during the test. I just assumed that's what it is doing, waited for 5 minutes or so, and my desktop ran. I have checked for disk errors before and it did used to show me the info.
• NOT formatted my drive and reinstalled Windows.
• Removed and reinserted the memory and GPU as well as made sure all connections are tightly secured.

|For proper operation, please ensure to update Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver to version 11.5.0.1207 and BIOS to version 3603 before enabling Intel Smart Response Technology.

|Update procedure for users needing Intel Smart Response Technology:
|(1) Enter OS, and ensure Intel Smart Response Technology has been turned off under Intel Rapid Storage Technology interface.
|(2) Install version Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver to version 11.5.0.1207
|(3) Reboot the system, and update BIOS to version 3603, then reboot.
|(4) Enter the BIOS setup screen, press F5 to load BIOS default, then change the Intel SATA Port to RAID mode.
|(5) Boot into OS, and re-enable Intel Smart Response Technology under Intel Rapid Storage Technology.|
