BSOD - HTPC - Can WMC be the culprit?

Hi guys... first post for a noob. I recently built a machine to use as my primary HTPC. I'm using as my main TV via cable card and Ceton Infinity pci card. Within the last few weeks my machine have started to lock up periodically and I'll have to hard reboot, or if it happens during the night, the system will eventually reboot and I'll be presented with a config. or log on screen the next morning.

I think I followed the BSOD instructions correctly and have attached the zip file. Hopefully you can help. I'm not a developer so I've never debugged code before but will give it a try if I need to. Thanks for any assistance.

So let us try to recover the error that is saying to be ntfs.sys.

  1. Reseat the sata and power.
  2. Run chkdsk /f/r, following the option two of the tutorial Disk Check
  3. Seatool for dos: SeaTools | Seagate download
Burn it in a blank cd. boot from the CD, click on "Accept", wait for it to finish detecting the drives, then in the upper left corner select "Basic Tests", then select "Long Test" and let it run.
► Another one:

Code:

BugCheck D1, {60, 2, 1, fffff88001d5f1f7}

[COLOR=Red][B]Probably caused by : tcpip.sys [/B][/COLOR]( tcpip!TcpSegmentTcbSend+87 )

Followup: MachineOwner
---------
tcpip.sys is network related. So upgrade the network drivers.
First, download the network card driver from manufactuer's website.
Then reinstall the driver:

  1. Click the Start Button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Start Menu Search box and press Enter.
  2. Double click to expand "Network adaptors".
  3. Right click your network card and click Uninstall.
  4. Check "Delete driver software for this device" check box, click OK.
  5. Restart the computer
  6. If windows does not auto configure the appropriate drivers at startup, install the downloaded one manually.
Do it, for:

  • Intel(R) Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter
  • ASUS PCE-N15 11n Wireless LAN PCI-E Card
  • Ceton InfiniTV Network Device
  • RAS Async Adapter
Gigabyte Easy Tune 6 driver (known issues w/Win7) : GVTDrv64.sys
Uninstall it, totally.

Intel Raid StorPort Driver : Very old, of 2005.
Update it from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx

LSI Logic Fusion-MPT FC Driver (StorPort): Of 2008
Update it from Pages - Find Support By Product

► For some other reasons, I would suggest you to turn on Driver verifier. There are a lot of Bugchecks you have got, which are generally for Device Driver failure, but not traceable apparently. Driver verifier will contain more info about the crashes in the subsequent dumps.

OK... I tried all your suggestions... and more. No difference really. Tried Verifier, but it crashed before I could get into windows. Just decided to do a clean re-install of WIN7. This is the funny thing, I got a BSOD before Windows could complete the install. WTH. Of course there was no Minidump because Windows hadn't installed yet, but I did get the STOP message on the screen, "igkdmdk64.sys". Happening during install makes me think my problem is hardware related.

Anyway, Win7 installed successfully. However, as you can see in the attached Minidumps, I'm still getting the BSOD. The three earlier and later dumps did not have Verifier turned on, all in between Verifier WAS turned on. I tried to read them in WinBDg, but except for reading the information in Analyze V and seeing the error stating 'WIN 7 Driver Fault' and the original error presented on the BSOD, I can't decipher what I'm seeing. What's the saying, "A little bit of knowledge can be dangerous" :>. Hopefully the attached dumps can provide you some info. on my problems. As I'm using this build as my main HTPC, this is becoming a real drag.

Here is some additional info. which might help. As I mentioned, my setup is an HTPC, with me using the Centon Infinity PCI and WMC. The guts of the system is a Gigabyte GA Z68ADHB3 with a Intel i5 2320 processor. Before the reinstall I was using the Rapid Storage Technology function caching to 64GB Crucial SSD, with OP on 2TB WD Black. Did not know if this could be contributing to the problem, so I did not engage in the re-install. Apparently, it was not the issue. As this is my main rig, most BSOD occurred during viewing in WMC. However, not all. Some occurred during regular web browsing. Some while windows was just opened and nothing happening other than the desktop being displayed. Very frustrating. Thanks for any help you can give. System Setting uploaded via System Spec. tool.

And it is the latest, and still crashing. What you can do here that you roll back to the earlier one. Use Driver Fusion to uninstall the installed version, then install the previous version. Search in Intel Download Center.

If it still crashes on igdkmd64.sys, definitely the GPU is bad, but what I am thinking, it is the integrated graphics. I may suggest you to either contract the vendor to check the motherboard, or use a graphics card.

Wow. Great Service and information.

I really don't use the onboard Realtek lan driver as it crashed shortly after install and updating really didn't help. Chalked it up to a bad chip on mobo. Hence, the Intel Gigabit Adapter. Not sure it's relevant.

Regarding the Intel Graphics driver, because I received the first BSOD during install which pointed to 'igdkmd64.sys' indicate a bad GPU right off the bat? Sorry if that sounds stupid.

I also could not get SPDIF output via the Realtek connection on the mobo... hence, the Sound Blaster X-Fi, which it turns out saved me because 5.1 via Intel Graphics caused WMC to crash EVERYTIME when saved in the Control Panel and WMC-LIVE TV was selected.

As a result, I'm now sending 5.1 via optical to my Denon AVR. WMC likes that, I resolved myself that audio and video to WMC was a little too much to ask. However, as a result, the Denon is dedicated to audio, as there is no way to process audio AND process the video to my flat screen. So I'm sending the video from my HTPC via DVI directly to my flat panel HDMI 1 connection which I just realized as I'm typing this is still using the Intel Graphic adapter.

Half way point... discrete GPU and keep truckin, or rebuild. What do you think?

In your situation, I would have swapped my motherboard.

Display, sound and network, all the adapters are seems to be gone in it.

How old is it? Is it still under warranty?

Unfortunately I purchased the motherboard back in March so it's no longer under warranty. I was on the fence on getting a discrete video card when I built the rig. Thinking I may just do that instead of going through the trouble of swapping the mobo. Newegg has the Sapphire Tech 100315L on sale for 135.00 with rebate. What do you think of that as an alternative?

The warranty should be of one year there. Check the terms again.

But if you want to use a graphics card, or even if you plan for a new build, nice plans.

What can I say ... if you use a graphics card keeping the motherboard, it may trouble anytime later. As it is a damaged one.

Thanks for your advice. I think you're correct. better to replace the mobo. I'm going to RMA to Gigabyte.

One last question, based on specs., will this motherboard work as a replacement ASUS P8Z77-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z77. I think I did my homework, but as a noob not sure if I overlook something. I know it may be a little overkill, but these BSODs are really annoying.

Thanks again for your support... coming from someone who works in support, it's appreciated!

I just swapped out my motherboard and did a reinstall on windows 7 and updated drivers with no problem. I have a P8Z68 asus motherboard so I was going to use the Rapid Storage Technology. Went into bios and set sata to RAID. However, when I tried to get into the configuration (Cntrl+I) on POST the system would not bring on the config. screen. After some research I realize I had originally installed the drives associated drives on the Marvell Sata ports instead of the Intel ports. I shut down the system, unplugged the power and reseat the cables appropriately. (something tells me that was where I screwed the pooch). I was then able to the get into Intel's Rapid Storage utility and setup the RAID0 with my 2TB WD and 64G Crucial SSD (which the utility selected automatically since they were the only HD hooked). When setting it up it noticed the SSD as being setup as a Cache (which it was previously on old mobo) so I deleted and reset the volume. Everything setup OK - volume recognized - Striped - 128k.

When I exited the utility and went to reboot, the system is now giving me a message 'Reboot and Select proper Boot device'. Nothing seems to help. I tried unplugging again and resetting boot priority but it was no help. I even tried deleting the RAID and resetting back AHCI thinking I could at least get back to where I was, but no joy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I'm good to go now. My main two problems were 1. switching the cables after setting RAID in BIOS, and 2. setting up RAID0. Because I had not installed the cables correctly in the first place, I did not see the Accelerate button and my SSD in the Smart Response Technology program. I mistakenly thought it was because I had not setup RAID0 (which is covered right before SRT in the Asus mobo manual, which indicates a RAID0 is necessary). Well, you do not have to setup the RAID... if the drives are connected to the INTEL connectors (as opposed to Marvell) the SRT program will recognize automatically and all you need to do is Accelerate and the program handles setting up RAID0 automatically. Simple right? NOT. It took a 10hr adventure to get there... I determined I wipe out windows on my HDD trying to setup the raid (original post). This time I would be smart and create the raid before setting up windows. My setup was a 2td WD HD and 64gb SSD for caching. Setup the raid and was able to boot with no problems and re-installed windows. However, now I noticed my 2tb drive only shows 119 gb available... stop laughing. I now know why. Re-installed thinking now my cables are connected appropriately and I will be able to set the SRT using my SSD. Wrong, I still can't setup SRT. DUNCE moment... Smart Response Technology and Rapid Storage Technology is not one in the same exact thing. SRT is actually a component of Rapid Storage Technology. Hence, I had to do another re-install, this time JUST setting up RAID in Bios-Sata controllers, NOT setting up RAID0. After re-installing windows this time, all I had to to do was to go into the program, now the ACCELERATE button was visible and the system setup RAID0 in a snap!!!!!

I posted the resolution on the outside chance another noob like myself is stupified on the above scenario. I'm totally feeling the 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing' metaphor. But as long as I'm learning... I'm cool.

Now it's onto... WTH - I had no idea sending 5.1 and video to WMC via HDMI was such an ordeal... on a HTPC build with a P8Z68 mobo and Intel HD chip, Realtek onboard chips, X Fi Soundblaster sound card, AND latest drivers, best I get is 2 Channels to WMC.... HA... further down the rabbit hole. Frustrating, but I love this stuff... learning!

Sounds like your cabling was more of a macramé'? glad you have it sorted.

I'm confused about sending video and audio via HDMI to WMC (Windows Media Center?)...on another PC?

I'm was sending both via hdmi from my htpc, to my Denon avr, then to my Samsung. Setup sound properties in the control panel for 5.1 but Windows Media Center fails speaker test. Best I could get was 2 ch. multichannel.

I thought I solved the problems by sending video directly to the sammy via DVI, and sound to my avr via SPDIF optical. What interesting is that this option did not work at first. I decided to unplug the hdmi > hdmi connections (pc to avr AND from avr to sammy), since I was now sending video via DVI. Attempted to 'reset' the sound profile by going into bios and disabled on-board sound. Rebooted. Confirmed and connected optical cable from pc to avr. Enabled on-board, setup sound parameters in control panel (24-96 now available as default format in Advanced tab). WMC speaker test for 5.1, success. But too good to be true. Got a BSOD. When the system was back up I noticed I was now receiving the 2 ch mix (PLIIx). Went into control panel and sure enough 2 ch is the only formats available. WTH.

I have a separate sound card (SB X-fi titanium) and tried optical from it, but WMC does not seem to like it as it does not pass the 5.1 speaker test. I had it working on the old mobo with the card so I'm assuming it's a drive issue.

A little research and I've found this is a problem for a lot of folks. I was hoping my mobo swap took care of the issue also. Apparently not. I find WMC having problems with true Dolby hilarious.
