BSOD IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and random freezes

Good morning, Arc,

My computer powered off while I was running Furmark. There was a beep and then poof! The laptop was off.

In regards to the network driver, Intel says I have the latest one, so there are no available updates.

I will post a speccy screen shot soon. Hopefully the computer doesn't power off on it's own again.

The network driver I suggested should be an updated one over that one you have installed for WiFi link 5100 AGN.

This cannot said to be hot.

Can you change the battery and the AC adapter, if possible on a trial basis?

The other possibility that is coming in my mind is not good/pleasant to say. In this situation I would want some experts to have a look at your issue.

I unfortunately do not have a spare battery (my battery doesn't hold a charge, well, maybe 3 minutes or so worth of computing time and I don't have an extra AC adapter, no. So, does it look to be an overheating issue? Something inside this old guy is all fried? Hm.

Oh, and also, I installed the new intel driver, but nothing seems to have changed. I'm still on the same driver.

Well, I'm not an expert. An expert is just someone from out of town with a briefcase. I don't have a briefcase. :D However, I am most concerned with the 'something went pop'. Whatever that something was, is not a good thing. Do you have any ideas what it was. You heard the sound and it's not possible for me to guess. I have to depend on you. It could have been the graphics card, the Power connection or the motherboard, or most anything else. Have you tried running everything and found anything different? I can give you a few tests to run to see if the card is OK, but I'd like to hear your ideas first.

Well, I'm not claiming to be an expert but if the "dead" battery is installed, the AC adapter will still try to charge it and it may be drawing too much current for the adapter to charge the battery and run the PC. To save itself, the adapter will turn itself off until it cools down. I'm not sure the PC will work with the battery removed and on the adapter but you can try it. If it doesn't, you'll have to replace the battery.

Essenble: Hello there! Well, you certainly are knowledgeable if Arc is requesting the assistance of experts, but with such a title as Jedi Master, I would find it hardly surprising...

Regarding the pop sounds, it wasn't like an explosion of some sort, but more so like a beep from the computer. I would think it's a fairly common sounding beep, the sort of sound a computer makes when there is some sort of error I'd say—or so I hope. I want to say that it's like that sound when you accidentally press/hold shift for too long and Window asks you if you want to enable some option. Nothing seems to be out of ordinary.

Carwiz: Thank you for the input. I've removed the laptop battery and am currently running my computer via the AC adapter. I've really only used it out of comfort for when I'm sitting with the laptop on my lap, but I can do without it if it means a healthier/cooler computer.

Thank you Slartybart for the links, They are quite interesting to read through. Like the last link, I've experienced "After a hard reboot, I noticed that the HDD light is solid red and the caps lock light constantly blinks. About a minute after this, the internal fans will start to run at full power." Though I've also had the LED red light blink regularly. If I remove the AC adapter and wait for a couple of seconds, then plug the AC adapter back in, the problem will cease and I am able to boot back into Windows.

I will take note of how many times the LED flashes next time it happens.

If you are concerned about the hard drive, this may be an option you may want to do. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

You can also download your manufacturer's diagnostic tool to run the short and long tests tp see if you are having hard drive problems.

I managed to locate an HP page on POST codes:
Computer Does Not Start and the LEDs Blink or the Computer Beeps HP Pavilion dv7-1245dx Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support

I don't want to distract you and essenbe but if the machine is trying to tell you something, this might help decipher what it's saying.

I also read an interesting discussion by two hardware technicians - I didn't post a link because both of the basically replaced everything in the machine.

But there were two post comments that you might want to try, they're fairly simple.
1) Restart and tap the F8 key repeatedly - I forget what screen is brought up (recovery?) but you just want to exit and start normally. Doesn't seem like a winner to me, but it can' hurt.

2) Power down the machine
disconnect all power sources (AC and remove battery)
Press and hold the power button for 2 minutes.
Connect only the AC power
Start your machine.

Lights? Beeps?

Slartybart, don't worry about distracting me, I said I'm not the expert. You sound like you are doing an excellent job of helping. I agree, the purpose of beep codes is to tell you something. I would like to think they would be in the manual, but what do I know? If I was that smart, HP would hire me.

Slartybard, you are not distracting anyone here, I assure you. Any form of help is much appreciated, no matter the outcome. I will continue to monitor the beeps and LED lights should the laptop once again go into such a state. Meanwhile, I will try your suggestions out and look through the documentation you've linked. :)

Slartybart, don't worry about distracting me, I said I'm not the expert. You sound like you are doing an excellent job of helping. I agree, the purpose of beep codes is to tell you something. I would like to think they would be in the manual, but what do I know? If I was that smart, HP would hire me.

I have an extra briefcase if you need it.
The manual.... yeah, I should have looked there. I just so used to not finding information in HP manuals that I forget to open them. I just search HP and poke at links that sound like they might have something useful.

I'm no expert either, I know some experts though.
(That worked for Henry Ford when the board tried to expel him from his company)

edit: Ok NiSym, we'll wait for your next update.
I type too slow ! You posted before I finished my response to essenbe ;)
