Solved BSOD (Netio.sys) on a new laptop

Hi all,

I bought a new XPS17 from Dell online about 2 weeks ago. It was running perfectly fine until I started using uTorrent, then my computer started acting up.

First, the computer would freeze for 5-10 minutes and not respond to anything I tell it to do. Once the "freeze" was over, it would instantly process everything that I clicked on at once. This would only happen once per restart/shutdown cycle.

After a while, it started to BSOD on me with a Netio.sys error. I got 3 in an hour when it first started, but it is very erratic and I can't replicate the BSOD at will.

The laptop is an OEM version (originally installed) and is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I haven't installed or updated any additional drivers apart from plugging on and auto-installing the required drivers for a microsoft mouse.

I've attached the zip file with the dump files and the perfmon files.

I'm not sure if it's relevant, but during the BSOD frenzy, in between the BSODs, there was a message at the bottom right of my desktop that said "This copy of Windows is not genuine"

EDIT: I'm not sure why Perfmon says that I do not have an anti-virus installed. I've got the default McAfee (pre-installed) on the system. I've been advised to delete it in favor of another anti-virus like Avast. That's on the to-do list after this as I do not want to change any files that might be related to the dump logs.

Hello Elys, welcome to SF!

Your last three dumps are all D1's pointing to NETIO.SYS
That's a driver that comes / gets updated through Windows Update. Looking at your logs... it looks like something went quite wrong in your updates. I think the first step is to fix that...

Please have a look at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html

And make sure you go through all the updates?
If that's done and you still get BSOD's, post those and we'll get back to you.

I had a look at the link and did Option 2 since Option 1 didn't look like it would have changed anything. I searched for updates after and there were no updates available. The failed updates are still listed in the history. Did I do anything wrong or is that normal?

In any case, since I have no idea how to replicate the BSOD, here's to hoping that it's gone.

Sorry about the double post! I wasn't sure if editing was the best way to go about this.

I did what I said above. Then I started up uTorrent and got another BSOD. I was BSOD-less for a full 24 hours with uTorrent not running (so I'm pretty sure that this BSOD has to do with uTorrent).

I've attached the new file generated by the jcgriff application. (Only one new BSOD)

In your second to last post there are still unfinished updates in history. That can be ok as long as you check carefully per update number that the most recent mention is a successful instal. If it is not, install manually.

I can't look at the dump right now ( am on an iPAD.... Wouldnt work...) but would hazard a guess it is still netio which could be triggered by uTorrent. We'll have to look into that. What's your utorrent version?

I went back through all the updates. All the failed updates were successfully updated in a later update.

The BSOD was indeed a Netio.sys BSOD.

I'm running uTorrent 3.0.

I'm not into uTorrent... Is that the latest version?

It is the latest version.

I think McAfee was causing all the BSODs. I decided to uninstall McAfee to see if it would change anything, and the BSODs stopped right away.

So here's to hoping it stays that way (this time)!

I would test one thing at a time. McAfee is known to sometimes cause problems in W7, so test that first. We'll go to memtest if you still have problems. Don't forget to install another AV though!
