Hi,

I'm continuously getting various types of BSODs, mainly the PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA 0x00000050, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x0000000a and SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION 0x0000003b. But sometimes the computer works ok for hours without triggering any BSOD .

Browsing through the different threads in this forum, I've noticed that some users have gone through similar problems as mine, but honestly I have tried a lot of things by myself without success and thus I hope that someone here may be able to help and point me in the right direction.

System information:
Thosiba Qosmio X505
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q [email protected]
DDR3 Dual Channel 8GB Ram (Two Kingston sticks)
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M graphics card (Driver 9.18.13.2723 from 12 Sep 2013)

My drivers, windows updates and BIOS are up to date, I have gone thorough a complete computer reboot (factory settings) reinstalling everything, but something is triggering these random BSODs and I can't tell what is it. Could it be the graphics card, antivirus... absolutely no clue at this point :geek:.

One typical symptom is that either I get a BOSD, or the screen freezes and sometimes turns off.

Per the posting instructions, the SF file has been uploaded.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Kind regards.
Luca

I would suggest you to see how it goes without Norton. Uninstall Norton and all Symentec products using Norton Removal tool. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

The network driver, Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC driver, too.

Update it from Realtek

And, the display driver, where the issue is assigned with the hardware.

First, use a good driver. Install NVIDIA DRIVERS 314.22WHQL which works good with your GTS 360M.

  • Uninstall All nvidia items in Control Panel > Programs and features
    • 3D Vision Control Driver
    • 3D Vision Driver
    • Graphics Driver
    • HD Audio Driver
    • PhysX
    • nvidia Update
(Are you using nvidia chipset drivers? If so, dont uninstall anything other than those are listed).
  • Now follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
  • Download 314.22 WHQL. While installing, Select Custom (Advanced) install. In the next page, follow this settings:

Then, as hardware is pointed, do some hardware tests.

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.
Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

Test your RAM modules for possible errors.
How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.

Is the computer hot? Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy.

Let us know the results.

Hi Arc,

Thanks for this.

FYI, I purchased this computed in 2010 and it used to work very well. One of the two fans had to be replaced under warranty because it was failing. However I regularly clean the fans with a compressed air spray due to dust.

I will start immediately with your suggestions and send you an update on how thins go.

Cheers

Hi Arc,

Update on where I am:

1. Removed Norton 360 (using Norton Removal Tool)
2. Installed Microsoft Security Essentials

Rebooted the PC and did a full scan. During this time (over 2 hours and 2m files checked) there were No BSODs. Tried to do some of the things that triggered the BSOD (watching movies over the internet, using games requiring high graphics resolution) and still no BSOD (good news... right?). Would probably guess that Norton 360 had some responsibility but still need to finish the other tests to provide you a full status.

I've heard that Norton is a bit "intrusive" but never had problems before. Do you think that I may re-install Norton 360 once all is solved or is it better to just throw it in the trash? I'm just gutted to know that I recently paid for one more year license and I can not use it. Anyhow if Microsoft Essentials is the solution, then to hell with Norton. I rather have my PC working :p

3. Installed Free MBAM.

After installing free MBAM, I tried to run two full scans. For whatever reason after 20-30 minutes the screen goes "black" so I have to reboot the "ugly" way (press the start button for several seconds etc..). I thought that by updating the NVDIA driver and doing the stress tests I can solve this problem. Thus I decided to go ahead with updating Realtek and NVIDIA drivers in the mean time and then run a full MBAM scan.

4. Installed Realtek RTL8192SE Package driver (Same as for RTL8191SE).
Driver Version is now 2021.0.203.2012 (2/3/2012)

5. NVIDIA Driver update
I didn't start the process yet because when I tried to click the link you provided for Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling tutorial, the browser tells me that "you do not have permission to access this page" even though I'm logged in as a member. Any chance you can give me the go-through steps?

Stress Test and Temperature reporting:

Regarding the stress test (which I've never done in my life) to be carried out once the NVIDIA driver is installed, I read the Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark tutorial. What screen resolution do you advice me to use, what am I looking for during this test, and if I see any "artifacts" how do I post them here?

Finally, regarding the reporting of the computer temperature after several hours of usage, I noticed that Speccy is a payware tool. Before I purchase it, any chance I may use any other free tool, or is Speccy the preferred one?

Thanks again Arc for your time. Look forward hearing from you.
Regards.

The drivers clean leftovers link got removed for some technical reasons.

You use Download Driver Fusion (Driver Sweeper) - MajorGeeks to clean out the leftover files .... delete as much as permitted by the free version ... no need to go to the pro version.

Then install th suggested driver and perform the stress test.

If there is any crash or artifacts, you tell us about it? :)

Speccy is a freeware ... no need to click the buy now button at all. Speccy - System Information - Free Download

Hi Arc,

New update from my previous post :)

5. NVIDIA Driver installation
Removed NVIDIA Drivers per your suggestion (Control Panel/Programs and Features) and cleaned leftovers with Driver Fusion. I think all went well. For whatever reason it installed TuneUp Utilities... should I remove it? :o

6. Installed NVIDIA driver 314.22 WHQL with Custom Selection (Advanced). All went well after booting the PC. Attached is a snapshot of the Device Manager.

7. Installed Furmark for the Stress test
Attached is a snapshot of the settings used (resolution 1680x945 although it seems Furmark used 1280x720).

Did the stress test for 30 minutes monitoring also the Speccy summary TAB with the following results:

GPU 1: GeForce GTS 360M, max temp was 83°C (It came up slowly and stayed around 81-82 peaking at 83)
CPU: Intel Core i7 720QM @ 1.60GHz Max temp was 95°C
Motherboard: Max temp was 98°C
Hard Drive: Max temp was 39°C

Is it a Pass or Fail based on the above?

8. Speccy
Speccy has been running for a while now (including the stress test). Enclosed is a snapshot of the current temperatures from the summary tab.

Two items left to do: Spyware full scan and RAM modules testing. Will let you know the results. In the mean time any advice?

And yes: No BSODs so far :D

Thanks.
Regards

Do one more thing ..... dismantle the computer. clean the entire carefully. Clean all the air vents and fan grills. While re-seating, apply new thermal paste to the CPU.

When done, let us see another speccy screenshot.

Everything else seems to be fine.

TuneUp utilities is harmful. It can damage the windows installation beyond repair. It cleans some necessary files assuming junks which are not junks at all and damages some system resources by this way. Better you uninstall it.

Hi Arc,

Thanks for the advice. Running the RAM modules testing at the moment with first pass completed (it takes about 1 hour 20 min for each pass). I won't have any complete results until tomorrow. As soon as completed I will post the results.

Will uninstall TuneUp as soon as test above is done. Glad that I asked the question.

Give me a couple of days to clean the computer and find the thermal paste.

Regards,
Luca

Dont worry, mate. Take your time :)

The programs having a MSI based installer saves the uninstaller files and icon files in a place that is C:\Windows\Installer (it is a hidden system folder). Some examples of such programs are MS Office, Adobe Reader, Corel Draw etc. TuneUp cleans the location C:\Windows\Installer up assuming all those are junks. The result? No icon for MS word! You thought you want to uninstall office and reinstall ... no way, coz the uninstaller is killed, too :sarc:

Well, that is only one example of a mess caused by TuneUp.

Hi Arc,

Thanks for your note! Always good explanations. Update:

I let the RAM modules testing (via USB) go for 9 passes (basically 24 hours) without any errors :). Temperature of the CPU was 70-73°C in average. So I guess this is a Pass?

Just uninstalled TuneUp utilities. About to start the Spyware full scan (Lets hope that my screen does not go black like last time).

Looking for the Thermal Paste. Will keep you posted on the above.

Cheers again

Quick update since my last post.

I ran the spyware full scan and all went well. No black screens, no BSODs so far... could it have been really Norton 360 all this time? Incredible. Honestly.. for what you pay...

Since I guess I won't install Norton again for obvious reasons, can you confirm that Microsoft Essentials is just what is required to maintain system safe?

Regards

About MSE, I will not deny that there is a good debate .... how much protection does it actually give.

I use MSE and MBAM combo over a time .... and never got any infection. I know a lot of other people on this forum who does it like me. You may use this setting for a few days, at least as a test.

Hi Arc,

Ok will keep MSE and MBAM for a while and see how it goes.

Good note is that the BSODs stopped.... and hope it stays that way.

I've never opened a laptop before. After seeing various videos showing that basically the whole laptop has to come apart to access the CPU and Fans, I think it would be best to find someone that knows what he is doing (at least to put it back together :)). This computer is really good, and would hate to ruin it.

On a funny note, there seems to be a war out there on what is the best thermal paste to use (LOL) :).

I'll post back as soon as I accomplish this last step.

In the mean time, thanks again Arc for all your help! Truly said, you have saved me a lot of headaches! Wish I had joined this forum earlier and posted when the problems started.

Regards

You are welcome mate :)

I am in the same boat ..... never opened a laptop ever :) Laptop hardware are tricky :)

Find a technician nearby and get the job done by him, if possible?

All the thermal pastes are good, but most of the people trust on Arctic Silver :)
