BSOD playing FarCry2 bugcheck was 0x00000124

Second time I have had this BSOD in the last two days. I had been having skipping sound problems and had tried reinstalling sound drivers (same version) and video drivers (updated version). When those did not work I tried removing Speedfan (v 4.47) and that did work, reverting back to Speedfan version 4.45 and that is when the BSOD started when playing the game. My first thought was my video card was getting hot because the older version does not raise the fan RPM when the card gets hot. I raised the RPMs manually and tried playing again. It BSODed again. I am not sure why, I am including the zipped file from the diagnostic tool. Thanks for the help in advance.

Can you update ASUS Xonar DG Audio Device driver? If is old and goes back to March 2011. The site where you may search for the possible updates are ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download or ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download Xonar DG
Probably the problem started after installing the audio card?

Uninstall all Roxio products.

The version of Roxio in use in incompatible with your system.

Uninstall AVG using AVG Remover. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

Probably you may want to uninstall this one , too.

Start Menu\Programs\Emsisoft Anti-Malware

You have the best one already installed, MBAM.

Thanks for the response Arc.

This problem started, unbeknown to me, by upgrading Speedfan from v. 4.45 to v. 4.47. Now using v. 4.46 and now seems to be much better, but not completely gone.

I have the latest version: 7.12.8.1794 of the Xonar DG driver installed. Asus seems to not care about updating drivers and many people have complained...to no end.

I uninstalled Roxio a while back due to the error codes showing in Event Viewer.

All for now still working on the rest.

The problem of Xoner is that Asus makes the hardware only, and uses the drivers made by C Media. So The drivers becomes usually backdated. While choosing a device, it is to buy one where the device manufacturer makes the driver, and the driver is known to be properly coded; like Creative's audio cards.

With SpeedFan, change the fans settings. Use comparatively moderate settings that the machine can take easily.

I had an X-Fi Extreme card and their drivers caused far more problems then the Xonar. Not going back to Creative again.

I guess the Zip file I posted has the BSOD dump file in it. I would like to know what caused the BSOD. I do not know how to read it. Can you tell me what caused the BSOD or tell me how to read it?

OK, I think it was the sound card drivers. In the process of trying to fix my skipping sound problem I tried 3rd party Xonar sound drivers called Xonar Unified Drivers v. 1.64. I believe I have completely removed them now: see Xonar driver cleaning guide...at least I hope so. I did the Manual Way Part A. Part B seemed to me to find a lot more then I was willing to take a chance deleting. I'm now thinking having both drivers installed caused the BSOD. I did uninstall the Unified drivers before reinstalling Asus's drivers, but as is the case many times the uninstall program did not completely remove it all.

I have been playing FarCry 2 for a couple of hours now and the sound although not completely without some small popping here and there is altogether much better. What do you think of just going with the Xonar Unified Drivers v. 1.64?

I noticed that IRQ 19 is shared with my sound card and SATA RAID Controller. Could this be a problem? I do get momentary hangs for about a second or two from time to time in game.

Removing the Xonar driver, you have done a nice job But I dont have conception about the unified driver unfortunately .... as I am not an Asus user. You may go for it. If it causes problems, you con uninstall the driver again.

If you dont use a RAID setting, better you dont use RAID controller drivers installed, as they cause various problems. But the memory hang .... I think you mean the game is stopping for a couple of seconds? If so, it might be an issue of the GPU .... sometimes the GPU misses a couple of FPS during the gameplay. Reducing the priority level, texture settings etc may make the situation a bit better.

I had a BSOD (same 124) with the ASUS drivers while watching a DVD (that was a first) so I went ahead and reinstalled the Unified drivers, besides they are newer and I seem to not have cleaned them out completely anyway. Used Driver Sweeper in safe mode to clean out the ASUS drivers.

So far they seem to be about the same as the ASUS drivers or a bit better...only time will tell.

I do have a RAID 0 setup using a 65 GB SSD as cache.

Yes, I mean the game stopping for a second or two and then it goes on as nothing happened. I did try reducing the quality of the video card in the past and it did not help. Not sure what you mean by priority?

Priority is the settings level .... as it is ranked as High, medium, low, etc.

To determine how much the ASUS device\driver is responsible for the crashes, I would have tried it using the onboard sound.

Clean reinstall would be a nice idea.

BSOD again with Xonar DG third party drivers. It was much more stable, but in the end I decided to try the on-board sound. I'm now using, as of today, the on-board sound and it seems to sound pretty good...only time will tell. If this does not work out then a clean install is in my future.
