BSOD random

in spite of following instructions for setting DMP file locations, my recent dumps have been going to: C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG

I copied the most recent one to C:\Windows\Minidump

and ran the Windows_NT6_BSOD_v3.03_jcgriff2_ EXE and it used it, so I attached.

Also, the last couple of BSODs did not create a DMP file, even though they said they were, so not sure how relevant this fairly recent one is.

I did replace my graphics card before the last couple of BSODs.

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps.

Do what JMH suggests FIRST. After that please update these drivers from as far back as 1996.


Please remove any CD visualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp, called sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM (MagicDisc) in its place

How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

Holy crap, that was quick... As I said, I assumed my video card was failing and replaced. The couple of BSODs I have had since (that did not generate dumps) happened while using a serial to USB adapter cable to use GPS data from a GARMIN unit.

So if I want to use DAEMON tools virtual drive I will only use when needed and not have it start up w/windows anymore?

Why would my dumps not be created (as in last 2 crashes)?

Not that easy. Daemon tools (and alcohol 120) load the problematic driver whether you are using it or not. The only was is to remove it or rename it preventing it from loading.

I saw that when I went to tell it not to startup w/windows, but... This " MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM (MagicDisc) in its place" does not appear to be for mounting ISOs in virtual way which is what I use DAEMON for, though VERY seldom.

Am I missing something re: MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM (MagicDisc) in its place ??

GPU z will run, but CPU z will not run, keeps crashing
