BSOD randomly, and consistently within 10 minutes of startup

Hi, so as my title suggests, my computer randomly BSOD's, but always within like 10-15 minutes of startup. I can be doing anything from watching youtube videos, playing starcraft, or not even doing anything, and yet my computer will randomly BSOD.

However, it isnt a BSOD in the traditional sense, because when the error thing pops up when i turn my computer on the next time, I get a BSOD error, but when my computer crashes, I don't actually get a blue screen. My screen just stops receiving from my computer, and it acts as though nothing is attached to it.

Also, the error code is 116. If my computer crashes again, or rather, when it crashes again, I'll also add a comment with the error report.

edit: also, I want to thank anyone, and everyone who will take time out of their obviously busy schedules to help me. It really does mean a lot to me, and although it may seem trivial to you, I value your assistance greatly. Thank you, and please excuse my ignorance.

So as the title suggests, I try to update my graphics card driver (nvidia gtx 480), and each time without fail, I will get a BSOD, 5-25 seconds into installing the updates.

However, this is not the only issue, because when I'm using my computer normally after getting fed up trying to update the drivers, I get an apparent no reason BSOD while doing something like watching youtube videos, or even playing minesweeper (or I could be doing nothing at all and it'll still happen, albeit later).

2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
3. Select the “Startup” tab.

5. Apply > OK
6. Accept the restart.

you're a god among men. Thank you, Arc. I caught a cold, so instead of staying in my dorm, I went to my parents house for the weekend, so when I get back to my dorm on Sunday night, I will implement these changes and let you know how everything goes. Thank you very much.

Also, in terms of the windows updates, I have an "illegitimate" version of windows 7. Basically, I updated once, and for some reason, windows would delete my desktop background, and tell me to update windows. I got sick of this, and just undid the specific windows update, and I have been reluctant to update ever since.

Also, thanks again, I shall let you know the results of these changes on sunday.

Arc! Heres an update on my situation.

Hey Arc. So i downloaded windows service pack 1. I also deleted daemon tools and the asrock utilities. However, as I try to download the new nvidia gtx480 drivers, i get a BSOD every single time. Also, attached will be another dump file.

Hello Andrew, I am a bit curious ... were you shifting between the onboard graphics and the card graphics? The dumps are saying so.

If you want to use the onboard graphics, you are to update the intel graphics driver. Get it from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx.

If you want to use the card graphics, you must to troubleshoot stop 0x116. http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lo...op-0x116-video_tdr_error-troubleshooting.html . As a start, do it: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/100356-video-card-stress-test-furmark.html.

Ark, I did not even know that I could switch between the two (I'm a beginner, I have relatively no idea what im doing). If it was switching between the two, it was happening without me knowing, and I wasn't doing it consciously. And im pretty sure I want to use the graphics card graphics, because those are better, presumably, right?

also after instating the previous changes, my computer is now BSOD'ing basically as soon as it finishes booting up, and the desktop shows itself. it just BSOD's right then and there

Change the video settings from BIOS, set it to use only your graphics card or your ITG (integrated VGA) only. Is this a new computer? and is it under its warranty? Since when are you having these problems?

koolkat, its a new computer, first one i built on my own. The parts are under warranty, i think for around a year.

I didnt do that graphics card thing, so I'll do that, and see what happens. Thanks.

Also, right now, im using my onboard graphics which is literally working fine. No problems. I haven't had a bluescreen for like 2 hours using the onboard graphics (Which is funny because in the BIOS, I set it to only my graphics card, but the onboard graphics are working because those are what i plugged it into). But for some reason, when i switched to primarily my GPU, my screen would literally not even show up. It wasn't that it was getting no signal, it just showed a literally black screen. I still heard the start up sounds, and I could tell that my computer was now "working," because I heard skype go off and what not, but literally, just a black screen.

Your graphic card sounds like a faulty one. Do you have a spare one to try? or a friend you can lend to check if its working okay with your computer?

Okay so I went into bios and I changed it to using only the pci express card (which is my GPU) instead of onboard, and instead of letting it do the switching thing, i set that to disabled. With those settings, the graphics card would not work AT ALL anymore and I would only get display with the monitor attached to the onboard. so as we speak, im using onboard graphics. ALSO, I havent had a SINGLE blue screen with onboard graphics.

But also, it doesnt seem to be a hardware error, because i downloaded and ran furmark on my GPU before I changed BIOS settings, and my GPU leveled out after 10 minutes and was fine. so... im thinking its either a problem with my internal hard drive, or my drivers...

Are all the parts of your computer compatible with each other? It would be helpful if you could lend a graphic card from a friend or neighbor and see how it works on your system.
