Solved BSOD seemingly randomly. No new apps or hardware installed

Thanks, I have just updated my audio drivers and USB host controller drivers. SFC scan reported no integrity problems.

Fingers crossed no more BSODs.

I will let you know!

Good Job and good luck.

Sadly I spoke too soon. The system just BSODed again, just after I posted that last message.

I have attached the dump file.

Thanks both,

I have tried to answer the questions asked above as succinctly as possible below:

Have you ran any type of registry cleaner?
Yes. I have run the most recent version of CCleaner, other than cleaning up some old records for uninstalled programs, there were no other issues identified.

Checked that all cables are securely connected?
Yes and can confirm that all are fine.

What anti-virus are you running now?
Microsoft Security Essentials, fully updated

When was your last scan?
A quick scan was performed today with no threats identified. I have not been able to run a full scan as the system BSODs before it can finish.

Also download and run Malwarebytes, be sure to update it before running.
I have already updated and run Malwarebytes when this first started occurring, with no threats identified. However again it was only a quick scan and not a full scan as the system will not stay up long enough.

Im worried the system will BSOD mid-typing, so I will continue in another post.

Old drivers.
Update these drivers.
If you can't update these drivers, uninstall the program for testing purposes.
I have uninstalled or updated these drivers where possible. itunes is already as up to date as possible and I havent got anything installed that I can find for Gearsoft except for perhaps a virtual CD drive, which I have also uninstalled as a precaution.

What USB devices do you have connected?
- Logitech Quickcam Pro 3000 - now uninstalled
- A USB thumb drive is plugged into a port on the back of my monitor. The drive is currently empty but I sometimes use it for transferring files.

Check in Device Manager for any yellow triangles, this indicates driver problems.
There are no yellow triangles in Device Manager

Have you been checking your temperatures?
Use Real Temp , to check the CPU temps when at idle, under load and/or testing.
Let us know the minimum and maximum temps you get.
Real Temp is currently reporting the following. Currently all I am doing is responding to this post so the load is basically idle.

View attachment 209172

I will try and put some load on and will update you with the temps accordingly.

Running memtest86+ for only 3 passes is not long enough.
Run memtest86+ for 7 full passes, best to run overnight, if you get any errors you can stop the test.
I will leave it running overnight tonight and update you with the results ASAP.

Go to your BIOS and tell us what the CPU, RAM and the CPU integrated memory controller voltages are.
This is important in order to make RAM settings adjustments.

I will update with this ASAP once I have figured out where I am looking for them in the BIOS :)

In addition to Dave's suggestions you might want to re-install your HdAudio drivers.
I updated the HDAudio drivers just before the last BSOD, is this still showing as an issue? Should I re-install them again?

I have now run the Memtest86+ for 20 passes with zero errors.

Go to your BIOS and tell us what the CPU, RAM and the CPU integrated memory controller voltages are.
This is important in order to make RAM settings adjustments
I'm not entirely certain if I have all the right items you want, but this is what I could find in the BIOS:

- CPU Core Voltage set to Auto,
- Current voltage: 1.176 V

- CPU I/O voltage set to Auto,
Current voltage: 1.176 V

- DRAM Voltage set to Auto,
- Current voltage: 1.472 V

- System Agent voltage set to Auto,
- Current voltage: 0.920 V

As far as I can see the RAM Voltage is currently 1.64 V

Next will be CPU temps when at load.

Ok I didnt run load tests for these temps, but I was running Battlefield 3, which is about as load intensive as this system would get anyway.

I used Coretemp to show the at load temps, as the screenshots also show what the load was for each CPU.

Since un-installing or updating the drivers and applications as advised above by Dave76 and ZigZag, the system has BSOD again in the same manner as usual.

Your motherboard manual: MSI P67A-GD53 Intel P67
MSI Global ? Mainboard - P67A-GD53 (B3)

All the CPU temps look good.

Your BIOS version is V1.12, which isn't listed on your board site.
There are 5 updates since yours, going by the date of your BIOS.
Improvements mentioned:
- Improved memory compatibility
- Improved VGA card compatibility
There are quite a few updates, which would indicate they were trying to fix problems.
With your issues I would update the BIOS to V1.19.
If you haven't updated BIOS before, let us know. There is the chance that it might fail and leave your board useless.

While at the MSI site check for any newer drivers.

Thanks Dave,

I havent ever updated the BIOS before no. But I can try.

I disabled the realtek HD Audio in device manager as I have the Xonar DX installed instead.

For the hard drive error, does it say which hard drive? My primary is a SSD.

Will the Seagate Seatools long drive self test be ok for the SSD?

To update the BIOS, do not do it from the OS or from internet apps. Use the CD or USB install method.
If anything intrudes on the system while flashing the BIOS, it can cause a corrupt BIOS and can leave your motherboard useless. If the Anti-virus decides to run while you are flashing the BIOS it can cause big problems.

MSI Award Flash BIOS Procedure

Award Flash BIOS Procedure

First of all, please make a bootable floppy or USB storage.
Next go to MSI website to download BIOS zip file, then copy "AWFL865.exe" and "BIOS file" into bootable floppy or USB storage.
Please go to "BIOS Setup" and choose floppy or USB storage as 1st booting device under "Boot Sequence".
Same procedure for AMI BIOS on the link.

Hi Dave,

I updated the BIOS last night, and used the process detailed on the MSI website and as you have detailed above. after completing the system will no longer boot into Windows and BSODs just after the "Starting Windows" screen.

I then cleared the CMOS for good measure but the same BSOD occurs on boot.

I think it might be time to re-install Windows now.

OK the new BSOD is resolved. I had forgotten after the BIOS update to change the config from the default IDE to AHCI mode for the SSD hard drive that has Windows installed on. I am now testing to see if the original BSOD still occurs and will update you asap.

Thanks again for your continued help!

ok it was up for about 45 mins then BSOD-ed again. I was running it at load to test and the max temps were hitting 65 degrees centigrade. when the BSOD ocurred it was between 45 and 52 degrees across the cores.

Let me know if you want to see the crash dump files again.

Yes, upload all the dump files.

What were you running to load test?

Your max CPU Core temp is 77.6°C
Intel® Core™ i5-2500K Processor

The Seagate Seatools test is for Hard Drives.

Update all your drivers from the MSI motherboard site, don't use the CD.

With Seatools, I cant find an option for long Drive Self Test? Only Short Drive Self Test or Long Generic.

Which should I use?
