Hello, I recently bought Radeon R9 290, it installed fine, but when playing some games it shuts downs randomly, sometimes after a few minutes! I reinstalled the GPU drivers, but the problem still occured! At first I thought that it might be my motherboards AntiSurge fault, but it wasnt! I will post my report file and hope that someone could help me! The main concern is that my PC shuts down not restarts! When I turn it on again it shows me the ''Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown'' window! I read other threads here but could not find a solution, maybe because its specific to my PC built!

Here is what the window showed me:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1

Thanks! I tried all the things mentioned in that post I tested my RAM, CPU speeds, hard drive! I cleaned my PC from dust and reseated all wires, RAM, and GPU! Could it fault of old CPU thermal paste, I havent changed it once for 5 years?

The temperature of the GPU is extremely high. Even the stress test does not put the temps to that high all the times.

I wonder that the GPU will not be able to take the stress test.

Get a decent GPU cooler, as soon as possible.

Thermal paste controls the heat of the CPU, which is under control.

But as I read for Radeon R9 290 the 90c temp is normal? Now I put GPU fan to 80%, the temp cooled down to 75c, but the fan makes a lot of noise! I really regret buying this card! What cooler can I get for this card?

100 degrees C makes the water evaporate. So 92 degrees should not be normal. If it is normal for any sort of hardware component, use of it may damage the other parts of the computer.

Still, as I am not a hardware guy, I will request our hardware experts to comment about it. Perhaps they might think differently and guide you the proper way.

When the initial reviews came out on the 290 and 290X the temps were hitting 95C. AMD said not to worry, they were designed to take those temps. What else would they say? As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing in my computer that will ever get that hot. However temps in that range is common, but how long they will last is unknown. I know of no computer parts that can withstand that type of heat constantly. If I were you, I would water cool it or sell it and buy something that ran cooler. That's just my opinion. It has always been said that the biggest killer of computer components is heat.

Driver update: 14.4 is available: Release notes

Layback's excellent article reference mentions an issue with the default fan speed.
The only thing I could see in that article that addressed that was
1) a driver update would make the switch on the 290 actually do something
2) the default 40% speed isn't sufficient, a driver update raises the fan speed to 47%, but you have to reset to defaults to activate the new value (50% is the minimum recommend by the article - but how?)

Plus, what I got from the article was the minimum 50% fan speed was just enough to keep the card from throttling. That's what I call, living on the edge. Living on the edge is, I'll admit, something I have done, but only at times I chose to do so. Living there daily is not something I'm willing to do.

It's simple to me.
If anything in the computer gets to hot you either fix the problem or get rid of the problem.
Because of the price of a 290x card I would put it under water for cooling.
Honestly doing a little research and homework I don't think anybody would buy that video card unless they had a very good water cooling system in mind.
