Solved BSOD :The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort5.

Hi All

(Question : How do I verify what hard drive is installed on device5? I am going to try another sata cable once identified. In BIOS Sata 2 is the SSD and Sata 5 is the WD 150gb Raptor. Micron controller in BIOS relates to drives 6/7 & 8/9. Switched these of only impacted my DVD drive and the WD1TB data drive).

I have performed a resintall, restored from an windows image backup back in August which was performed after a fresh install.

Symptoms : Random bsod and some intermittent hanging for 1 to 2 mins. Suspected a new SSD drive which is what led to the reinstall. Ref previous thread :

Most current occurred when perfomering new backup in Windows7 data backup appears crashed during data transfer.

Pre Resintall actions :

Updated firmware to SSD and Bios to latest available from manufacturers websites.
Updated chipset drivers.
Updated all drivers available : Soundcard/GFX/Windows updates.
Ran Setools and all drives report back positive/ok.
Ran Eset Nod32 scan (smart scan) of whole system, all drives. Nothing found.
Ran AntiMalwareBytes nothing found.

Have attached the relevant analysis files and currently checking the following thread :

I know this is something to do with the SSD drive.

I am reluctant at the moment to perform chdsk /r as I believe this will lead to problems as one initiated and running, any problems I can not escape the loop. Reason it crashes and I canb not void/skip the chkdsk as the USB keyboard is disabled as soon as the chkdsk process (and option to cancel it) is presented on the bootup process screen. This incidentally is also what happened leading upto the reinstall back in August.

If there is nothing more I can do I will copy the image file to anopther hdd, REMOVE the SSD and send back under warranty.

Prior to that lets see what else can be resolved

Looking through the Event log, I see that this is a restore from the broken image
I would really suggest that you do a fresh clean install - otherwise things are going to get *really* complicated
(Like, you're already in the WGA grace period, because the hardware has been detected as changed)
Just don't activate the new install until you're happy with it.

I really dont understand why it's already broken, thanks anhyway.

What I had simply done was a full reinstall from the original W7 retail disk and then installed the supplementary programs that I use regularly on the rig to create that image.

I'll close the thread and will do another fresh install

Create an image with all windows updates and ms office installed.

Then install the studio programs and do a second windows image back up.

The studio software takes, as a general rule, about 8-10 hours which is why I used the (what I thought was clean) windows install.

Something I have noticed is that chrome (used to view tvctachup and other onine tv) was constantly crashing or corrupt cache date. The software wouldnt install again or update so I deleted and resintalled. This took my system from version 13 - 15. I know it has nothing to do with controller drivers for the sat/ide but may again be linked.

I am off work this week so lots of spare time. Im going to use the same image from the SSD on to an IDE HD and see if that crashes (just to safe the pain of reinstalling everything). Will this SSD install image work ok on the normal sata drive?

OS already activated with 4 remaining. Saying that I haven't ever had issues with MS OS failing authentification when changing software (harddrives/graphics cards/soundcards, etc) as I can do this often.

If you're still having issues after the fresh install.

D/L and run Western Digital Lifeguard – Quick Test and Extended Test.

For your external HDD, D/L and run Samsung ES tools – Drive Diagnostic test.

If you have suspicions about your SSD, install the OS on a HDD for testing. You can install a backup from your SSD to the HDD.
Not a good idea to install a backup from a HDD to the SSD, as the SSD needs to have correct alignment.

Also, if you are installing the OS to your SSD it is best to save/backup all your data, then secure erase the SSD and point the Windows 7 installer to a bare, unformatted SSD. Win7 will align and format it correctly.
To be sure the boot files stay on the SSD, this is a common problem, disconnect all other HDDs before the installation.

After the installation, ensure you have crash dumps enabled.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:
Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

Have you checked your system temps?
Check your CPU core temps with Real Temp , let us know what the temps are at idle and under load.

There are 100's of these errors.

Do you have 2 CD/DVD drives?
Using IDE ports?
If yes, then if they are on the same IDE channel with incorrect jumper settings it will cause this error.
If the cd-rom jumpers are set as cable select then the IDE cable will not support it. You may have to Configure the jumpers to master/slave option.

You may need to update the SATA controllers, which version are you using?

Ok Dave that's good clear advice.

I am up and running without any crashes...so far and I am monitoring over 24 hours.

I initially felt it was a corrupt SSD drive and install. Now I am wondering if it is something less obvious.

What I have done is downloaded the latest jMircon drivers from their website : JMB36X_WinDrv_R1.17.63_WHQL and installed this seems to have stopped the initial hanging when booting into OS/desktop. I have read on EVGA's forum (motherboard manufacturer) that the jMircon has caused inherent issues. However I need to point out the IDE 5 (i believe) is on the mother board and not the jMicron ports (6/7 + 8/9).

Also Chrome has been updated. Whilst Chrome appears not to be the main problem I do believe it was not helping. When opening version 13.xx it kept trying to restore from a crash (even when closed properly: file\exit or 'x' box). It also deleted (on several occassions) favourites which are now restored and would also report corrupt cache entries. No virus or malware as the system has been checked by eset nod/antimalware and MSE(now uninstalled). This I believe may have been causing issues with data throughput on the system. But I am not wholly convinced.

One more suspicion which is possibly clutching at straws. The GFX card and monitors. The master display I have force/swapped as the seconday and the secondary is the master. I can simply swap the leads over use the other DVI ports on the gFX card. Is leaving it to windows likely to cause any issues over swapping the leads?

So by tomorrow I do foresee doing a fresh reinstall with all drives detached etc. Keep me busy for 2-3 days :/

QUESTION :

I am going to use seatool or find a boot that will secure wipe the ssd.

Once this is done I do not need to do any alignment, partitioning or prep work. I can just simply insert the Windows7 install DVD and install fresh. Is that correct?

As I am stripping everything back to barebones I want to make sure there is nothing more I need to do please?

Check the above post, I have been editing it as I find more information.

Have a look at this OCZ thread: How to Secure Erase Your OCZ SSD Using a Bootable Linux CD

Windows 7 will take care of everything need for the OS installation if you secure erase the SSD, leave it blank and un-formatted, then point the Windows 7 installer to the SSD.
It will align it correctly and format it for you, no prep work needed.

As mentioned in the above post, you may be having issues if you have 2 CD/DVD drives installed. If you do then un-plug one of them for the OS installation.
Also, un-plug all other Hard Drives, this will ensure that the boot files get onto the SSD.

What I have connected to the motherboard =

1 SSD (Shows as IDE Western Digital Lifeguard but is actually SATA is this relevant?)
3 Sata (All WD 1 x raptor 150GB / 1 x 1TB 64mb cache new network drive / 1 x WD 640GB)
1 DVD/CD Writer no more
1 External USB 1TB WD Drive

Ran the Western Digital Lifeguard and all drives reported fine.

As I write this I have had no more BSOD or crashs. If I do I will report back.

However after reading your post Dave and knowing PCs as well as i do ... reinstallation is inevitable. Saying that no glitching/hanging or resets... can I have a hald 'Amem' please

CPU overheating is something I hadn't thought about. I don't over clock even though the processor allows and neither the RAM which is 1600mhz but installed stock @ 1066mhz no timing ammendments.

Reason is I don't need a 'Performance' PC for over clocking gaming or kudos. Just handles the software I run much much better.

Main use is the odd game (I'm an addict to a few).

Main use Studio recording programs which run plugin programs which often consume more resources than the host program along with audio samples which are regularly held in memory. Any audio is then written to the hard drive but this is done on the raptor. Overall I have had no or minimal problems. What leads me to this explanation is that Cubase and plug-ins hog a lot of resources and tasks simultaneously and doesn't;t crash. However what I did discover is that there were 3 versions of the driver installed across the Windows system directories. This is now resolved. But I don't believe bears any relationship with the IDE 5 issue.

Will pop back in onthe next BSOD should it occur. So far 10 hours no bsod. hurrah fingers crossed.

OK it just replicated itself.

I keep missing the BSOD error 0x00 code but will catch it.

When it happens is after main monitor in full screen mode plyaing a game and secondary monitor is running chrome with tvcatchup. After exiting game and when I press the 'x' on chrom to close it - instant screen death.

Main error in 'Resource and Peformance Monitor' = Disk Busy 927 /sec Disk I/O is more than 500 (read/write) per second on disk 1.

Checked Disk1 in disk manager and indeed ssd.

I am in denial and will have to face the reality of a full reinstall...hey ho

When I last installed I did not align disk, security erase. I just let Windows7 do what it had to do and other drives were connected.

If it's all down to IDE Port 5 I am guessing as all the drivers and so on have been installed it's simply the SSD not being set up properly on the install, which I am guessing in turn meant certain controllers/drivers were not installed correctly.

Double grrr....it's not just the installs that grind me, its all thge authorisation and repetative data entry codes, user names and serials required.

One last thought.

Does it matter what sata socket on the motherboard it is on when installing Win7?

If it was initially installed on port 2 and was then changed to port 4 at a later stage would that impact the OS's performance or behaviour?


I have run the CPU temp see attached JPGs.
I am in the process (time permitting) in imaging the SSD to another harddrive which I should be fine with as I have a spare in good condition. This will, I imagine, eleminate the drive?

Generally SATA port0 is used for the OS drive.
It can be changed to other ports with no ill affects, but I would keep it on port0 if possible.

If the right RealTemp window is idle temps and you have a stock Intel CPU cooler, then it's about right.
Check the temps when your system is maxed out.

Intel® Core™ i7-920 Processor
Your max recommended temp is 67.9°C for Tcase (your CPU case) add 5°C for max core temps, 72.9°C is max core temp for your CPU.

My i5 750 is OC'ed and runs Prime95 at 57°C, so no real need to have your system running above 60°C.

That is a good way to test the SSD, move the OS image to a HDD and un plug the SSD. This should tell you if there are any issues with the SSD.

Hi Guys

Well faced the inevitable and invested time with a full reinstall from scratch. I was starting to go round in circles, installed additional drives and software which I believed should not bee necessary for my setup.

Thank you all for your help you've been great with the endeavours, time, patience and help.

Here's my advice and solution that I have now been running fine with for 3 days without a glitch (well 1 BSOD when installing office but this may have been an issue with a non-powered usb hub and software security dongles). See attached jpegs.

So the solution was brutal, necessary and following the wise words of Gregrockers http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/151566-reinstalling-windows-7-a.html#post1300819 performed a total reinstall.

Process :

• Backed up any important data on the OS drive ie; bookmarks, etc.

• Updated the motherboard bios using the latest available from the hardware manufacturers. Reset everything and rebooted back into BIOS. Set the BIOS for Hard Drives to AHCI for all drives and SSD to default boot with no other devices bootable including LAN etc. Switched off any unecesary motherboard hardware (2 on board ethernet sockets as I use a seperate PCI ethernet card) and the onboard HD sound intel CH10 (from memory). Made sure as many relevant bios setting at default/auto particularly for memory and cpu timings.

• Disconnected all hard drives leaving only the SSD on Port 0 and the DVD drive (IDE 1) connected, replaced all the sata cable with new ones (had some spare). Had a general clean up of all the fans and tidied all cables leaving inners streamlined for air flow. All Hard drives except SSD still not attached and left out for the remainder of W7 install.

• Using the Linux/Ubuntu boot disk method performed a secure SSD erase restoring the drive to manufacturers state.

• No formatting required as SSD secured wiped let Win7 decide and did not opt for format. Installed Windows7 without any usb ports occupied (apart from mouse and keyboard) and no other hard drives or hardware attached (apart from the obvious graphics card etc...Im not that good).

• Ran updates for everything.

• Reconnected each hard drive one by one performing reboots and updates on each occassion. I did not use any of the JB Micron controller ports. On reading some post around the net and from users on the manufacturers (EVGA) forum they are not overly recommended, feel free to interject and correct my info here. This also identified that one of my recent harddrive purchases was a SCSI drive on SATA with 64MB Cache, believe this may be better serviced on a motherboard with USBIII?

• Once everything was done performed a windows backup system image before installing any more hardware, software or drivers.

• Installed each hardware component piece by piece using windows update driversw or latest manufacturer drivers. Rebooting on each install.

• Installed all relevant software required for my use and registered (takes hours, well 2 days but done). Only software I installed for system maintenance was CCleaner to keep the SSD free of junk, ESETNod 32 (I trust this antivirus), 7zip for compressed files, VLCPlayer for playback, Infranview for photos, Foobar for music, copytrans for ipod and only firefox for browsing (ignoring Internet explorer 9). Configured all the software for my use (again time consuming) and promised should I need anything more in the future I have a book to make notes and when a page is filled restore from image, retweak and back up again.

•Checked the eventviewer verifying no nasty exclamation marks and warnings, apart from one's which I was aware about when installing 2 pieces of aditional software and trying to be clever.

• Renamed the original WindowsBackUpSystem image to original and performed a final backup along with recovery DVD just in case.

Been running now for 3 days and only 1 BSOD which occurred when installing Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007. Ran antivrus and spyware check on the disk in the laptop. There were approx 6 cab files not accessible so rescanned system post office install. On second install attempt all went smoothly. Possibly the ide cable was not quite in properly. This is a genuine copy as far as I can tell.

So what I have learnt from this lesson :

Be patient, dont do short cuts no matter how tempting it may seem and be pragmatically logical on installations. A well thought out and proper installation saves a hell of a lot of time and trouble trying to resolve issues and running around in circles, creating more problems and adding further issues into the equation. Further more if anything more happens I can just reinstall again and I believe the image is suitable for any SSD or Harddrive, again interject if I am wrong here.

Dave if you read this I kept the CPU fan speed to 800RPM from the 550RPM just to be safe, not that the temperatures ran to high with the two 140mm fans on the cooler tower I shouldbn't hace any issues. Maybe an overclock on the memory in the near future we will see!

There are times when a clean install is needed, some people spend days/weeks trying to fix an issue when a re-install will give you a crisp, fresh, fast OS.

Ok final update as it's now been several weeks and daily use for hours on end.

All running fine. No BSOD's, crashes or strange going on. In fact everything is running very smoothly and ready to overclock the memory, or rather upclock to 1600mhz that the memory is meant to run but defaults as 1066mhz.
