BSOD this morning, but first for a long time.

I was doing nothing exiting, just browsing forums, when the crash occurred. In fact the computer has been on but idle for some while, whilst I was otherwise occupied. FWIW only other item active was our internet radio.

Can you kindly examine dump file to see what and how serious the crash evebt was.

And a deeper search reveals that it is caused by avast! File System Minifilter.

It might be a simple glitch. So better you wait and observe if the BSODs recurs or not. If not, well and good.

But if it recurs, Uninstall Avast using Avast Uninstall Utility. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.

Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

Interestingly, issue 45 of Computer Active Magazine is recommending Avast Free Antivirus 2014 over MSE, as Microsoft has said it is potentially unreliable. However, I haven't been able to find a link to the original comment by Msoft.

As for Mbam I have the pro version

As a daily poster of more than 100's of BSOD threads, I suggested what works. Not sure what a magazine may say, but they are not active with regular issues as we are at all.

Avast causes BSODs. We see it every day.

For MBAM, the pro version adds a real time protection there over the free version. MBAM, interestingly, it is the best as an on demand scanner, but the real time protection .... not really worthy. Plus, it is better to not use multiple real time protections at the same time. There is a chance of conflict all the times.

I hope you did not think I was critical of your post! Avast 2014 is quite recent. Are the BSODs coming up in similar proportions to earlier editions?
