BSOD when alt tabbing or quitting game

First off, thanks so much for your time and expertise! I've been having this issue for a while now, but it's gotten to the point where it BSOD's about once a day. It mostly happens when I alt tab or quit a game (dota 2 is a common one) but it can also happen at any time, even when I'm away from the computer.

I don't have an error code, but this is the info windows gives me after I crash:

Daemon Tools is a known cause on BSODs, uninstall it.

I also suggest removing AVG as it too can cause issues.
I recommend installing Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes as a replacement.

Make sure you don't enable the free trial of Malwarebytes pro

Wow, thanks so much for the informative response. I've done everything you've asked and I think I actually notice a bit more pep in my computer. Haven't had any BSOD's yet, but it's only been a few hours since I've made a change... so we'll see! I'm looking to upgrade some hardware on this old computer as well... can you direct me to a forum or website that could look at my specs and suggest the most cost efficient parts to upgrade?

I would be happy to help you with upgrade recommendations if I knew what your system specs are now. At the bottom left of your last post, click 'My system specs' you will have a link there to update system specs. Fill out each one of those in as much detail as possible and be sure to click save at the bottom of the page. If you would like to know what we need, click my system specs at the bottom of my post and see mine. If you will do that I would be happy to help. It would also be helpful to tell me what you do with your computer and what you want to be able to do that you can't do now. Also if you have a budget please let me know. Basically, just give me an idea of what you are looking for in an upgrade and a budget.

Hey there essenbe, thanks so much for jumping in! If there's any more info that I need to put in there, let me know. To be honest I use this computer mainly for games, but I'm also looking to use it for music production (just bought a keyboard controller + Cakewalk). I wouldn't mind spending around $400 bucks improving it where it needs to be improved (I've just recently seen a slow down in general performance). I don't need to have the fastest computer in the world and I'm not a gamer that needs every game on ultra graphics setting in order to enjoy it. Basically, if there's any glaring issues in my hardware that could easily be improved with little cost, let me know!

What make, model and size PSU do you have? That will determine if you can get a better graphics card for gaming. Just from a quick glance it looks like a basically sound system. I have the same CPU you have, although I'm not using it at the moment, but it was plenty enough for any game. For games and probably for your music production I would consider a better graphics card. For general use, I always recommend an SSD. An SSD is the most noticeable upgrade you can do to any computer. And with the prices down right now, you can find some very good deals. You only need one the size of your OS and programs. You can put your user files ( Documents, videos, pictures and music) on your mechanical hard drive. That's what most of us do anyway. To give you an idea I have all my programs and the OS on my SSD and user files on mechanical drives right now and am only using 40GB of space on the SSD. That includes Windows 7, Microsoft Office and a whole bunch of programs. I think the sweet spot right now are the 128 GB SSDs. I think a good one could be bought at that size for $100 or less. Set up right, I doubt you will ever run out of space. I keep all my games on another drive.

Games are more Graphics card oriented rather than CPU, so I would look there for gaming and probably your Music production also. The Music will be more CPU heavy though probably. If you need more you can overclock the 2500K if you have the cooling or get a 2600K later if needed. The 2500K will do anything the 2600K will do, just a little slower. They are both the same CPU, just the 2600K has hyperthreading.
