BSOD when gaming

Hi all

I'm getting random BSOD's, name changing each time it happens. I was previously only getting the BSOD when playing "Dead Island" via steam. Then noticed this issue is happening on Empire Total War (a game i've never had with issues with) and also DOTA and rising storm (no issues previously).

Exact same GFX issue happens prior to BSOD, so guessing its my GFX. I get lots of pixelated squares on the screen, game freezes, followed by a black screen, then game resumes fine. After happening 5 times or so, with a gap between crashes at around 5 mins I'll get a BSOD. After each pixelated event, I receive a windows notification indicating my GFX card has stopped working.

Windows action centre supplies this info:

GFX temp sits around 70-90c when playing high spec games, idles around 30-40. I've recently powered down the PC and cleaned dust out using compressed air.

I also recently completed a memory checker using win7 feature, no issues detected.

Only other changes I've made, I updated my GFX driver from 10.0 to 13.xx as of 28-29th...Previously windows was telling me it was up to date until I manually checked due to receiving BSODs.

Has happened several times today without any gaming.

I've tried reviewing the dumps but it says there are none. I've changed the properties to do a small dump from kernal to see if that changes anything.

I'll try these in the morning, ty :)

I'd just like to add that I've noticed my settings aren't saving when I reboot or system recovers from a BSOD. So things such as my extensions on Chrome don't load and I have to re-install, auto start programs such as Skype and Steam don't load and don't have the login details either.

Finally, and the worst. I spent all afternoon installing a game, played for a few hours then had BSOD, reboot PC and find the game is no longer installed :(

EDIT

Ok this keeps happening now. Windows wants to install important updates (pertaining to security and .net framework). Downloads/installs updates and asks for a reboot. PC reboots, black screen appears providing options "safe mode, safe mode with networking etc" then I'm back to the desktop with the same updates to install.

Furthermore, .dmp files are only showing from the 28/11 and last updated files for windows on the 28th opposed to the 2nd.

Ok mate I think if only to eliminate it you should try a memtest as I am not ral keen on the Windows feature for testing memory.

First do the first little info I concocted then the memtest

SLOTCLEANING

Now as for the slots to clean them use astrip of old credit card about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them off hold apiece of thin lint free cloth over the end dab on some form of alcohol - isopropyl alcohol (what we swab the skin with before an injection) is good and GENTLY swipe along the slots.

This can also be done for the GPU slot/s.

MEMTEST

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html this one you will need to make a bootable disk set the BIOSto optical (or USB if preferred) boot the machine and let it run for at LEAST 8passes unless the errors come up straight away. Takes fair time to complete andsome leave it running overnight.

mem test is not working. I have to go out but I'll check for solutions to memtest when I return.

I've installed the memtest to a blank USB, the files are on the blank (and formatted usb flashdrive). Reboot computer, It starts up, goes to windows recovery screen, select load as normal, it then goes to a black screen. Keyboard is frozen (no light changes on caps etc). Stays like this until I unplug the USB, then pc launches.

Same thing happens when I go to BIOS and set the USB to the 1st bootable drive.

I think my PC is seriously corrupted. I can't run a mem test nor use the windows mem test. After I select restart or shutdown and the computer turns back on, it always goes to the windows recovery page where I have to choose "launch in safe mode, with networking, normal etc" from there, it loads my profile and it appears to bypass any Mem test.

I also can't use my backups (corrupted), can't add a guest/new profile as its corrupted.

Dooley now one thing I can suggest you do is to try a optical disk for the memtest and set the BIOS to it. Personally I am not a fan of booting from USB sticks and avoid it where I can but that is just my own personal tatste.

I don't know if this would work but maybe disconnecting the hard drive/s is going to leave only the optical to boot from and run the memtest.
