BSOD when transferring files to external HDD

Hi all,

This is my first post and hoping someone can shed some light, as I don't know much about computers

I have a Toshiba ultrabook Z830 running windows 7 home premium 64bit (came pre-installed), I've had it for two months.

It was working great but lately I've been getting the BSOD lot, I noticed it only seems to happen when I'm transferring data to my external hard drives (WD 1 TB & Seagate 2 TB - it happens using both of them). I doesn't occur when surfing the net, playing music, etc.

When I transfer data it will generally get to halfway, then freeze for a minute or so and then I get the BSOD. It comes up quickly so I don't really get a chance to read anything.

Is this caused by a virus or something? I've have AVG pro and Malwarebytes and nothing shows up when I run both programs.

Any help you can offer in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, some additional information (although it probably won't help). I downloaded BlueScreenView and I've had about 6 BSOD's since I downloaded it, however it doesn't show any files in there. I've configured windows to create minidump files, but nothing. What does this mean?

Also, after reading some posts I did a sfc /scannow and chkdsk which both said there are no issues.

Hopefully this information sheds some more light on my situation.

Try disabling TPCH (Toshiba PC health Service) service ..... these were part of the freeze that had happened. As a matter of fact... try disabling or uninstalling all the Toshiba services from your system... and check to see if you get BSOD while transferring

Thanks for the reply. I did as you said, removed all Toshiba services and no luck. I think I might just call the place I bought it from and see if they can fix it, since it is only 2 months old.

Ok some more info, I got anther BSOD and this time had to read a little bit of the blue screen:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

STOP: 0x0000007A (there was more but I missed it).

I'm not sure why windows doesn't create minidump files for me, I configured windows using a tutorial on this forum, but nothing shows up.

Did you follow this Tutorial

Also under startup and recovery you can uncheck automatic restart.... Atleast you can see whats on the screen when you have BSOD..

By the way,,,, where is you Pagefile set ?? Is it on the main partition or another ???

Yeah that's the one I used. Thanks for the tip I will do that and post what it is saying.

I don't really know about the pagefile, I haven't changed anything around so it would be whatever the default is, I assume the main partition.

To check where your pagefile is

  1. Go to start
  2. Right click on computer and go to properties
  3. select Advanced System Settings
  4. Select Settings under Performance
  5. Then Select the Advanced tab
  6. Under virtual memory click on Change
  7. The C drive (or the main drive where windows is) should by default be system managed.... If its not... select the C: drive and set to system managed.

I checked and the C drive was the default.

I also had another BSOD and managed to take a picture with my phone, hopefully you can read it.

Do you see the second last line where it say the physical memory dump failed... thats why the dump was not produced or you couldn'f find the dump files in the usual place...

Well there is a registry solution to that... but prior to that could you upload the latest logs saved from System and Application from Event viewer so i can view the system at the time of the BSOD

I ran the whole tool again for you. I should mention that after uninstalling all of the toshiba utilities and it having no effect, I did a system restore.

Why system restore ???? for the toshiba utilities to be back ???

I understand your concern but we haven't finished troubleshooting

Yes, I just assumed as it didn't have effect it wasn't the issue. I will uninstall/disable again.
