Hey guys,

First of all, here's my specs:

Core2Duo E6400@2,13Ghz
Asus P5B
ATi HD 4870 1 GB, Catalyst 9.3
Creative X-Fi Music
4 GB Corsair RAM

OS Hard Drive: 74GB Western Digital WD740ADFD Raptor

Now on to my problem:

I've made a clean install of the Windows 7 7057 64-bit build on a new partition of the drive mentioned above. After that I installed most of my favorite tools, drivers and some games. It all went smooth and without any issues whatsoever.

A few days ago I noticed something weird, though. Certain tools or even some of their options "hang" for a duration of 5-10 seconds right after opening/selecting them before I'm finally able to use them without any problems. I've opened the task manager to see what's going on and noticed one of my two CPU cores spikes up to 100% when linked to those processes while the other core doesn't seem to care at all.

Let me explain by showing you some examples:

- Miranda. Opening Miranda works fast, but opening a message window for the first time causes the abovely mentioned hang for a few seconds before the message window appears. Core 1 efficiency for Miranda32.exe: 100%.

- Winamp. Opening Winamp causes a hang for several seconds. Task manager shows 100% CPU load on Core 1 for winamp.exe.

- Spyware Blaster. Opening SB works fast. Clicking on "Check for updates", though, causse a hang after which it's finally checking for updates. CPU load on Core 1 for spywareblaster.exe: 100%.

- Spybot Search & Destroy: Exactly the same as for Spyware Blaster.

- Opening the Avira Antivir panel: Although already running in the background, clicking the Avira control panel in my system tray also causes the very same hang before the panel appears.

I could go on here for several other tools, too. To my surprise, though, there are also tools which aren't affected by this problem: Thunderbird, Firefox, Skype, uTorrent, CCleaner and several others DON'T hang on start. This leads to me being unable to find any sort of pattern in this puzzle.

I should also mention that those hangs only affect the corresponding tools. It's not the whole desktop that freezes, it's only those tools. I'm still able to maneuver around doing other things.

Anyone around who does have a clue of what could possibly be bugged here? I didn't install any chipset drivers whatsoever as Windows 7 never wanted me to. There's also no yellow exclamation mark in my device manager. The system also seems to be able to utilize my second CPU core, so that shouldn't be the problem as benchmarks for this work fine displaying both cores.

I've also booted into safe-mode, but the problem still remains here.

Anything I forgot?

I'd appreciate any help!

Thank you,

Tom

Hey Gary,

Thanks for your kind words :)

I think there's a misunderstanding, there is NO yellow exclamation mark, so it shouldn't be related to any hardware conflict or missing chipset drivers.

I've just taken a look at the Reliability Monitor, but unfortunately, there's nothing showing up related to this problem.

Cheers for your answer, though. Guess I'll just wait for a next build to show up and start again with a clean install. In case anybody else still knows an answer, please let me know.

Tom
