Burn Disc Image - ISO or IMG file

How to Burn a "ISO" or "IMG" Disc Image file to a CD/DVD in Windows 7 and Windows 8​

   Information

This tutorial will show you how to use the built-in Windows Disc Image Burning Tool to burn a ISO or IMG disc image file to a CD/DVD in Windows 7 and Windows 8.

   Warning

Windows Disc Image Burner will need to be set as the default program with all of it associations (.iso & .img) set to it for this to work. It is by default in Windows 7 and 8.

Here's How:
1. Place a blank unformatted CD or DVD into your CD/DVD drive, and do step 2 or 3 below.
NOTE: If a AutoPlay window opens with the option to format the CD/DVD, then just close it.

2. Right click or press and hold on the ISO or IMG file that you want to burn to CD/DVD, click/tap on Burn disc image, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below)

3. In Windows 8 File Explorer, select (highlight) the .iso or .img file that you want to burn to CD/DVD, click/tap on the Manage (Disc Image Tools) tab and on Burn button in the ribbon, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below)

4. Next to Disc burner, click/tap on the drop down arrow and select the CD/DVD drive with the blank CD/DVD in it. (see screenshot below step 4)

5. Check the Verify disc after burning box if you want Windows 7 to verify the disc image afterwards, otherwise leave it unchecked. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: Verifying the disc will take a little bit longer for the disc image to be finished.

6. You will now see this. (see screenshots below)



7. If you checked the Verify disc after burning box in step 5, then you will see this next. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: You will not see this if you did not check the box. Instead you will see step 8.

8. When it is finished burning the disc image, click/tap on the Close button. (see screenshot below)

9. Remove your new burned CD/DVD image from the CD/DVD drive.

Does anyone know if the iso burner is capable of burning to dvd+r dual layer discs? I have a 7.xGB iso file and was wondering if I'd need to install my 3rd party software or not. Thanks for any info guys.

You would have to check your documentation for full burning capabilities, or search google for the hardware. Most burners do infact burn both + & - R but it's best to check.

Also, it would depend on the software used as to whether or not you can burn anything over 5GB. Windows shouldn't have any problem as it would have the native drivers for your hardware anyway.

I know my burner can burn to dual layer discs I wasn't sure if the windows 7 iso burner would allow me to burn to a dvd+R DL or not. I have some 3rd party software installed on vista atm that can burn to DVD+R DL's but I'm going to be installing W7 in dual boot and was wondering if I could burn iso files in 7 to dual layer discs using the built in iso burner. So you think it would be alright with this then?

You should see the Burn disk image option at the top of the context menu for .iso and .img files though.

When I try to burn on a DVD+RW I got this error:
"The disc image didn't burn successfully because an error occurred. Overwriting non-blank media is not allowed without the ForceOverwrite property set to VARIANT_TRUE (Error code 0xC0AA0405)"

How to fix this?

Did you try a different isoburner and see if you get the same error?

Did you erase the disc first? I find the best Image Burner by far is IMGBurn.

Nero 9 did the job, but I can't get IMGburn to run in Windows 7. When I try, first it ask me if it's OK to let this program make changes to my PC (UAC), and clicking YES to this the wizard-window opens for a few seconds and then closes again.
Which version of IMGburn are you using?

Well Nero does the job of course, but many people including myself, are becoming disillusioned with Nero as it is so top-heavy, hence they look for simpler solutions. I can't believe that Nero 9 can't even auto-update. Also when it installs it creates restore points for every component, in my case several dozen. Anyway, I digress.

IMGBurn 2.4.4.0. They have forums where you might want to ask about that issue.

Yep! Now Imgburn is up and running! It was because I have 2 dvd-burners, a SATA and a PATA. I was instruced to disconnect one of them before installing IMGburn, power off the PC, connect the disconnected dvd-burner, power up win 7 and HEUREKA, things are running nicely. That's interesting. I have my four DVD burners on my PATA sockets and my hard drives on my SATA sockets, so never encountered that dilemma.

As far as I understood it, it is a conflict with PATA and SATA and the "engine" (or whatever it is called) to burn CD and DVD, and therefore not a problem if 2 or more burners uses the same standard. Read/write to harddrives is another protocol, so this should not be affected.
I'm not a techical person, so I'm sorry that I can't give you a better explonation.

How to I make Windows 7 my default ISO burner?

I had installed a trial copy of another product. After uninstalling, I cannot burn an ISO in Windows 7 because the menu does not provide the default option. How do I restore the default options in Windows 7 to burn an ISO?
