Hello,

What speed should I chose when burning a bootable windows 98 SE cd-rw disk ?

Or doesn't that matter anyway ?

4X is the usual speed recommend for a bootable CD/DVD. If not available, use the slowest speed offered.

Alright thank you.

Would it be too much of a problem to run it on a 40GB harddrive ?

And if so, are there any patches for it ?

You can run it off a flash drive if you want, a 40 GB drive is more then plenty.

Just so you guys know, I am using a real computer for this, an IBM ThinkPad T-21

I seem to be getting an error when windows 98 SE tries to format C:

'Error detected while formatting primary hard disk partition.'

I am using a HITACHI DK23DA-40F as the hardrive.

Update: I've got it working, formatted C: with ms dos prompt and then the disk passed all windows 98 Scandisk tests, it's installing now.

Does SE have SP1 already installed ?

Well I have a folder with the name 'win98sp1' on a disk.

Online ? maybe for fun.

I have an other problem now anyway, it does not have the correct usb drive, so I will try to send one with infrared, and burn it on a disk if that doesnt work.

Does not have the correct usb drive for what ?

As far as I remember Windows 98 doesn`t have the files for high speed internet, only dialup modem, but don`t quote me. ;)

Let us know how it turns out.

High speed Internet should work if you can get network access. You will want to upgrade to Internet Explorer 6 even if you don't intend to use it. IE is a part of the OS, not just a browser.

Update: Succesfully installed usb 2.0 drivers, added a mass storage driver later and I can now open usb sticks, saves me the hassle of using infrared or cd-rw's if I need to transfer files.

*Flips off infrared*

Will finish installing display and soundblaster drivers, then Ethernet.

The 3com ethernet driver wants secure32.dll but can't find it, any ideas where that could be ?

I used a third party drive for the mass storage btw, I think at least, from the web.

There are still some free dail-up internet services by the way, fun for irc and bulletin boards.

Update: finished installing 3com drive, had to select the win98 folder in the CD

the 3com diag fails to load the library however, so I will have to look into that.

I am not even sure if the t21 has that network mini-pci card installed, but there are only two driver downloads available, one doesn't do much and the second one is the 3com.

Not worried about that, just doin it to see if I can can to the net through ethernet . Should be interesting :)

The only windows 98 pc we`ve had in the house used the phone line and AOL.

Installed 98 and I get the following error message....

Insufficient memory to initialize windows ( has 2 GB )

Too much memory I guess, try less, 1Gb, 500MB

I don't have any luck with the ethernet drives today, just installed display and audio drives, looks way better now ! the only 'problem' device left is the communication pci device.

The t-21 should use a sb-16/pro as a sound card, thus supporting pure dos games, the driver from the driver website is a crystal fusion driver, so I will have to test it out of it supports dos games with sb16/pro

Otherwise I could try dedicated sb16 drivers for either a dual boot dos or win98/95

I have Win 98SE running in a VM, no physical machine for it any longer. I also have Win 95 and DOS 6.2 VMs. Both those Windows VMs have internet and network access.

Even 500MB is probably too much for Win 98, try 64M.

I am running win98 with around 385 mb of ram

Doing a hd surface scan at the moment with scandisk, 3.4 hours :3

I should also be doing a scan on my two much older laptop hardrives from 1993, perhaps tomorrow.
