Burning windows 98

They have internet probably because they are in a VM.

Out of curiosity, what network card/driver does vm emulate ?

This may come handy for the topic:
Windows 98 Second Edition Service Pack 3.x

Not tried it in real hardware but seems good, it's a compilation of all updates to Win98 up to EOL.

Networking and internet should work, provided the correct drivers are installed. While dial-up was dominant at that time, broadband already existed and was actively used, mostly in enterprises than homes, but still, Win98 is perfectly capable of using it.
In fact, if memory serves, it has a very similar network option screen than in recent versions. Specifying the gateway as the router IP (or just using DHCP) should suffice to get internet access, or even networking with other computers.
I even remember using remote desktop (well, radmin really) in Win98 within my house :p

Windows 98 is limited to a maximum of 1 GB RAM but there can still be issues with over 512 MB. That was a huge amount of memory at the time. Whether or not Windows 98 can use that much memory to full advantage is another matter..

RAM limit for Windows 95 is 512 MB.

It depends on which VM software you use. These are the cards that VirtualBox can emulate:

  • AMD PCNet PCI II (Am79C970A);
  • AMD PCNet FAST III (Am79C973, the default);
  • Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM);
  • Intel PRO/1000 T Server (82543GC);
  • Intel PRO/1000 MT Server (82545EM);
  • Paravirtualized network adapter (virtio-net).
