i read your post, none of the problems are the ones i am having/none of the suggested fixes work

Can you check your event viewer for me please, and see if there are any events at the time your game froze.

when i read your post i tried loading the game, had to reset the computer, when it restarted, i looked in the event viewer, but i dont really know how to use it. Could you please direct me to where to find the events at that time?

OK, so it doesn't appear to be a conflicting application. Are you running 32bit or 64bit windows 7?

Ok, this issue has been resolved.

We stuffed around for a while trying to work out what exactly was going on.

Essentially the issue was caused by an Anti Virus and Security application (Comodo to be precise). So for anyone else that is having a similar problem, try disabling your AV and Security and see if it works.

I think LCD might link to his blog which explains in full what we did to fix it.

Usually the issues with this game come from video drivers. But the game is going to have slight issues regardless of what you do. I still black screen the first time I join a server after launching the game and I have to wait few minutes for it to resume.

Aside from that and more related to the issue. I use Avira and IOBit Security 360. Both work find and have not given me any trouble with games.
