Can I install Win7 64 on an old P4 PC?

I have an old desktop PC running on Pentium 4 + 4 GB RAM, I checked and this version of the processor does support 64bit OS. but what will be the impact of the Windows 7? can it handle it? the current Win XP is responsive enough except under heavy loads, can I expect something similar with Win 7?

If you can find Win 7 compatible drivers (Vista will work) then you can give it a go. But, if there are no compatible drivers, forget it. One specifically you will need is a Vista/Win 7 sound driver as the XP driver is not compatible.

With only 4GB of RAM you are better off installing the 32 bit version. The main use with a 64 bit is if you have more than 4GB of RAM. A 64 GB OS requires more basic memory than a 32 bit and thus you would have less for programs.

Totally agree with Fireberd. Install the 32 bits version.
If you have another HDD, replace the existing HDD to find out if Win 7 runs without any issues.
If it does, clone the drive to a 128G SSD and use the HDD for data.

Of course you can install W7 on a board running a P4, I`ve done it countless times.
