Solved Can I install Windows 7 on my new computer using this disc?

I am currently using Windows 10 because this came pre-installed on the Asus K31ADE computer that I bought in August this year. I didn't like Windows 10 when I downloaded the free upgrade in September of last year, so I took it out again and rolled back to Windows 7.

I like Windows 10 even less now that I've been using it for 4 months - and that's putting it mildly! I want to get rid of it and go back to Windows 7 but this new computer has never had Windows 7 on it.

I have the Windows 7 installation disc that came with my last computer in, I think, May 2013. Windows 7 was pre-installed on that computer and the disc was for use as a back-up in case the user needed to reinstall the OS.

Can I install Windows 7 on my new computer using this disc? As it says on it 'For distribution only with a new CSL Computer PC' it should contain the necessary drivers, but will they be compatible with my Asus?

If I can't get rid of this dreadful Windows 10 I might shortly be driven to smashing the computer instead, so any help will be most gratefully received!

Hi Sirius,

depends on the type of W7 licence.
OEM No
System Builder YES, possibly
Retail YES

I have not heard of CSL, so it should be either 2 or 3 of the above.

Can you confirm the ORIGANAL install type

Roy

I suspect it was an OEM as I don't have a note of a licence number anywhere. I was thinking that if I could get the OS on with this disc I could then apply for a licence. If I can't, could I get the licence first and then install the OS? There simply has to be a way of doing this as I'm so fed up with being bullied by W10!

Actually, now that you ask the question, I've just had another thought. I have a feeling that there was a licence number for Windows 7 stuck on to the computer case by the manufacturers. I've still got the computer upstairs so I'll go and have a look when I get a minute!

If you have a sticker then its W7 and on it it will state OEM,
System builder and Retail product codes are ON the packaging.

Your new computer will not have a W7 sticker and you can`t use the W7 key from the older machine.

"I want to get rid of it and go back to Windows 7 but this new computer has never had Windows 7 on it"

How can you go back to something you never had, strange you even mention this.

Why would you buy a new PC with W10, knowing you didn`t like it ?

I don't know what video card it came with in but if that's GT 740 and below, then he should use the onboard graphics.

Why would you buy a new PC with W10, knowing you didn`t like it ?

Maybe because brand new Windows 7 Pre-Built Desktop PCs are hard to find?

Hi,
It would be best to ask asus if win-7 can be installed on the machine and if they made drivers for win-7 for it.
You can buy a system builders win-7 pro still from Newegg in the u.s. but I have no idea about in the u.k. where one would purchase a new key for this machine.

Run this on the older machine to see if it can be moved but if it came preinstalled more than likely it is a oem and can't legally be installed and activated on another machine.

I'm beginning to think that, as the new computer is still under warranty, my best bet might be to see if I can exchange it for an alternative that comes with Windows 7 pre-installed. It might save a lot of hassle, IF it can be done.

As Microsoft has withdrawn windows 7 from sale to the public, Directly and through OEM channels the only way you are likely to source a suitable device is small "bricks and mortar" stores, with old stock. One other option is through business suppliers if you can persuade them to sell a single unit, and are willing to pay a lot more than usual for a consumer product.

Be very careful with online sources as a lot of the windows 7 on sale are now counterfeit, this may also apply to devices with Win7 Installed

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions. In view of the different views on this (on both this forum and the Windows 10 one) I think I shall ask my computer expert if he can install W7 from my disc and get it working for me. If he can't, he can probably build me one similar to mine but with W7 and take mine in part exchange. It will cost me, but at least I shall end up with something I'm comfortable with and doesn't frustrate me at every turn.

You cannot re-install Windows 7 to any device other than the original Windows 7 computer the disk came with - Even if you did manage to get it to install and by chance you could obtain the required drivers for the new machine this would be piracy and would eventually be noticed by Microsoft and blacklisted.

Your best bet for a replacement system with Windows 7 is likely to be shopping on line as there are still some Windows7 Laptops being advertised although there is no way to be sure that you are getting a legal OS. If you can find the windows 7 compatible components to build a suitable Windows 7 System allow at least £150 for the OS and with prices increasing as copies are getting rare £200 + is a possibility. Just make sure that the disk is in an unopened package with the key not visible from the outside, also check that the supplier will replace/refund any disk/key that proves to be a forgery or counterfeit in any way

Re read post #5

You still need an activation key, you can not use the key off another machine unless that machine is retired and uses a Retail Windows 7 key.

If it`s an OEM key, you can not use it on your new PC.

"Can I install Windows 7 on my new computer using this disc ?"

We have no idea and there`s only 1 way to find out. I even told you in reply #5 that you could try, and also posted you the link to clean install Windows 7.

It would have been much simpler if you had asked " I bought a Windows 10 PC and I would like to install Windows 7 on it, is this possible ? Like 1000`s have already asked and we would gladly help you.
