My hard drive is about to fail according to Dell . They are sending me a replacement and do a fresh install.
So I hope to save some documents and pictures to an external hard drive. Can I do this in safe mode ?
Would it be `safe` to send them from a normal boot ?,
if it could even do that at this point.

You can do that in safe mode but normal mode should work too.

You have to either include your external drive into the sendto folder or do a simple copy/paste.
