Using windows 7 ultimate 64-bit at the moment. Planning on upgrading to windows 10 soon. But I heard that once you change your motherboard you have to buy windows 10? Isn't it possible with some phone call to some ms support to transfer the license?

My product ID type is this:

Product ID Type: 5 - Retail

and I read this:

Update: In the comments, several people have asked what happens if you make changes to hardware. As I noted earlier, Microsoft doesn't provide details of how it calculates that hardware hash, but upgrades of system components such as a video card or a hard drive won't normally trigger a reactivation. If that happens, a quick call to the activation line will resolve the issue, often without any human contact required, in minutes.

The one exception is a motherboard replacement, which will inevitably cause the Software Licensing Management utility to recognize the device as a new PC and require reactivation, typically over the phone. A motherboard upgrade, even if you reuse storage, video, memory, and a case, is considered a new PC. In that case, if the underlying Windows license is from a retail copy, that license can be transferred. If you are upgrading (and not replacing) a motherboard on an OEM PC that was sold with Windows preinstalled, the license agreement prevents the license from being transferred.

I guess its a no then?

Yep not likely.
Probably worth a shot but I wouldn't count on it completely to be transferable.
Most of these retail versions came directly from M$ store back in the day and were not downloads that I know of completely M$ would send a disk in a full sized packaging with the activation key on it like normal office suites...

The academicdownload.com site has some of the hallmarks of being a counterfeit site... especially this page...
Customer Service
However, it does appear to be genuine.

Academic Licenses have special rules, but in the main they are Full licenses, and are eligible for the upgrade to Windows 10.
As to whether the upgrade will also be 'portable', I've not seen any clear word one way or the other.

You may get a semi-official ruling on it by going to the MS Windows 10 forums and asking there...
