I currently have a Samsung R580 with an Intel Core i3 process which comes out for me as 2.13 GHz . I want to upgrade to an i5 which will give me anywhere from 2.66 GHz to 3.6 GHz with the i5. The total cost for the 3.66 GHz processor is just about $220.00 .

Is it worth it to upgrade my processor to play more demanding games without lag and choppiness.

Most importantly, is it compatible to remove my i3 Processor and replace it with an i5?

And, if I do so will it erase my data?

Thanks SevenForums.com !

The quick answer is laptops CPU's are not upgradeable becasue the CPU is soldered in and not plugged into the motherboard.
If you are getting choppy video I would look into what else you may have running in the background. Seems you have a good video card and enough memory.

Whay software are you using to run your DVD movies? Are you sure you have the latest video drivers and software updates? These are just a few ideas I think you should check.

In some cases (depending on laptop) the cpu ls very similar to it's desktop counterpart in that it is removable. At any rate you would have to do some serious homework to make sure you get the same socket type and that your bios would even accept the new processor. Extra heat from a faster processor is also an issue because you only have one option for a heat sink and that is factory. $220.00 is a good start in saving up for a new faster laptop, I would go that route.

I don't know whether it's practical or not for the Samsung R580. Some notebooks have their CPUs soldered to the board, some are socketed. I wouldn't consider it without a service manual, or at least a great deal more experience servicing notebooks than I have.

On the plus side, the R580 is sold with Core I5 CPUs.

One minor consideration: in case you haven't noticed, Intel is now selling second generation Core CPUs. They use Socket 1155, rather than the Socket 1156 of the first generation chips. They are entirely incompatible.

Notebook PC buyer's remorse is common, but I believe that CPU upgrades are rare.

as far as im concerned (and this differs widely) the only upgrades you do to a laptop are add more RAM or toss in a SSD. if you even have to ask, my bet is that you dont have the experience or know how to do it and its not worth possibly turning your samsung R580 into a samsung paperweight...

if you are trying to play games on a laptop you should expect choppiness and lag... laptops get hotter, and are generally less powerful. most of the time in laptops the reason they usually dont run games as well is not because of the processor, but because of the weaker, on board, graphics card.. which 99% of the time can not be upgraded...

one thing to look for is if you can add more ram and devote more of the system memory to the graphics, that would probably be the best route for gaming anyways

conclusion: processor upgrade, no. more memory (cheaper than $220) possibly, and devote more of it to gfx - or buy/build a desktop to play games on :)

I think as mentioned above you'd be better off just adding max amount of Ram, but also adding a SSD would really make the real difference.
I tried searching a little for a manual download but gave up.
The afore mentioned would be about the best upgrade in my opinion but then your spending so much money why not just save up and get one you really want.

The max amount of RAM is 4gb which I have. And there are 2 Samsung R580s one with i5 and one with i3, the i3 is currently sold in Canada and both are sold in the USA, I live in Canada. And I got over 500mb of dedicated video memory so that definitely is not the problem. games look great it is just slow because of my cpu rate.

Heat management is very important in a laptop. Even if you could replace the i3 with an i5, it would overheat. The i5 uses around 20 watts more power than the i3.
